It's living with the Mallards at the local canal, but is larger. I suspect it's some kind of hybrid, but I'm usually wrong |=)| Does anyone recognise it?

I'm sure one parent is Shelduck, and the other does seem to be Muscovy. Where's Joern?

Graham

EDIT: Can't account for the patterned tertials or the blue eye though. Been looking at all sorts, and can't make this add up. Must be Sheduck, though?

hi John

Now that bird is a mixed bag of something

Yes I can see Mascovy in him, but I am not sure how many other mixtures are in there

Mascovy in the beak area for sure. Look forward to hearing more thoughts here! ;)

Many thanks again for the replies. Probably quite a mixture then. Would love to see it's family tree!

John,

The family tree would only contain Muscovy and Mallard, albeit domestic varieties of each. All the other guesses were wrong, as pronounced by Joern, who is a true expert on hybrid wildfowl (with due respect to Quercus and Hotspur who also got it right)

Graham

Well, this is a cross that can be tricky due to the variation in the many domestic duck races especially in domestic mallard duck, but there are also quite a lot of odd colour forms in domestic muscovy.

In the following link you find mainly photos and links to wild coloured hybrids Mallard x Muscovy, but also to some mainly white hybrids, clearly involving domestic forms from both sides:

Thanks again Graham. I got a bit confused for a while |=)|

Thank you Joern. The link is very interesting - I shall have a better idea of what to look for now.

All the pictures seem to show vastly differing birds in terms of plumage but in structure they all seem small at the front and massive at the rear like aunt that eats too many cream buns.
