eastern pa. Hawk Mountain (1 Viewer)

Went to Hawk Mountain in eastern Pa. last weekend and although a beautiful day, in the five hours there was not a great deal of activity. Found out with the high pressure system and light breezes makes the birds fly high over head. The best migrations occur after a front passes through. sort of like sailing conditions. Anyway did see many turkey vultures, three osprey, red-tailed hawks and sharp-shinned hawks. A worth while trip if you are in the area. It is located just east of Pottsville. Have a Yuengling beer.

Great spot... been there many times over the years.

Had awesome days with N. Goshawk and G. Eagle low fly-bys and many raptors coming in to attack the plastic Owl. Other days we were stuck watching TVs and Red-tails for hours. Didn't matter to me, I enjoyed just relaxing on the lookout rocks and enjoying the views and the fall air.

Gary,

If you haven't before, you may want to check out some of the hawk watches a little closer to home.

Allegheny Front on the Somerset / Bedford County border near Central City had 61 Golden Eagles among 708 raptors on Tuesday.

A little farther east is Waggoner's Gap just north of Shippensburg, another great place for Golden Eagles.

You can find historical as well as current counts along with more information about many of the hawk watches at http://www.hmana.org/
