So today I witnessed 2 female mallards clearly trying to get rid of the males that had latched on to them, but the way in which one tried to escape really impressed me.
The female and male were in the middle of the river when a second male came crashing in, while the male who thought he had laid calm to the poor female was fending off the intruder, the female dived under and when she surfaced she submerged nearly all of her body under including her head showing as little as possible above the water in a way a otter would swim.
She headed up stream to safety and the male was left looking around rather confused.
Rather a good tactic in thought.
