Field guide for Paraguay? (1 Viewer)

Are there any field guides that cover Paraguay?

David

Paraguay is included in the de la Peña book on "Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica". Is is not optimal, but it has range maps and it is very compact. Most species can be readily identified with this book. One group where I was not successful were the yellowfinches. I have not used it in Paraguay though.

The book is one of the Collins Illustrated Checklist series.

Other books, like the new FG from Avisbrasilis and the Argentinian FG by Narosky and Yzurieta probably cover only parts of the species.

Hi David

There are various publications by Guyra Paraguay [see http://www.guyra.org.py/]. These include a non-critical distribution atlas (i.e. quite a few of the records are extremely questionable), as well as a Paraguay guide based on the Argentinean one (i.e. an adapted Narosky and Yzurieta). I admit I don't have the latter, but I suspect all the 700 or so spp are included. It is probably mostly useful for the distribution maps as the pictures are terrible. Of course, all these as well as the de la Peña guide can be purchased in Asuncion if you know where to look [email me for more information]

I'm sure you will have found Fauna Paraguay http://www.faunaparaguay.com - but if not I'd definitely recommend it. I'd also recommend http://www.pybio.org, especially if you're interested in things other than birds.

If you'd like any more information please get in touch. My wife's Paraguayan and I've been there twice now.

Cheers

Fernley

The guide by Narosky uses mainly the same pictures from the guide from Argentina. Some 80 species were added with new pictures.
Text is in the same style like the argentina version. With no other book available, it is an acceptable possibility.

intermediate birder looking for a guide in Asuncion.. Can anyone recommend someone
'field guide' = book
'guide' = expert local birder
So... I think you need to start a new thread in a different forum:
