Germany - Bonn to Berlin (1 Viewer)

Hi All---

We will be going to Germany in mid-May and would appreciate any and all recommendations, both for local parks and for wildlife reserves. This will be our first European visit, so we do not have specific targets. However, I understand there is a Great Bustard in the area north of Berlin and would love to have details.

Hi Lofft,

Great Bustard is possible west of Berlin, near Rathenow ( near railway Line Berlin - Hannover ). The view tower is beetwen Buckow and Garlitz.
Montagus Harrier is also there.
40 km south is lake Rietzer See. The interesting part is beetwen Trechwitz and Netzen. Very comprimised, lots of birds on a small area.
25 km northwest of the Bustard area is starts the meadows of lake Guelper
See. Lots of ducks there, good chance for White-tailed Eagle.
If You continue to northwest You will reach Havelberg. The old church is seetled with birdlife e.g. Kestrel.
If You continue to west You will pass meadows of river Elbe.
After 30 - 40 km You will reach Ruehstedt, the storck village of Europe 1996.

Hi lofft, very good time to visit Germany birdwise.

To give specific input a little bit of the route would be helpful. How timebound are you to certain locations? How many days do you have. To maximize species I would recommend to go from Berlin eastwards then North to Baltic Sea+ North Sea into Areas like "NP Unteres Odertal" Peene estuary in mecklemburg and continue via Karrendorfer Wiesen to the West coast of Schleswig Holstein.

Distances are short and traveling is quick in Germany so you can easily visit a lot of areas depending on your "style". And it is rather birdy in a perspective that some birds are very common. Even in parks and urban areas you quickly get 20-30 species on your list. Unlike in some other countries those are the basically the same common species everywhere.

If you do a trip from berlin to Bonn you would mainly follow the Autobahn A2. Next to Berlin is the "Döberitzer Heide" which has a good Chance to give you some "spectacular" (we dont have a lot of those in Europe) birds like Hoopoe and Wryneck. You should get the Bustards near Garlitz (google for "Beobachtungsturm Garlitz") and "Gülper See" is also a nice place to visit in May which should give you Ortolan Bunting and maybe Whiskered Tern. Continue westwards towards the Okerauen near Brunswick and to the Rieselfelder Münster. That should give you a good bunch of water bound birds. For forested areas either you make a short detour to the Harz or the Teutoburger Wald. Both areas host most of the not Alpine bound forest birds of central Europe.

In the Area around Bonn/Cologne nice places to visit are the Wahner Heide and the Drachenfels.

In the Area around Bonn/Cologne nice places to visit are the Wahner Heide and the Drachenfels.

Any specific corners to visit? I've been to the main platform at the Drachenfels, and casually visited the Wahner Heide once without really finding a promising spot. Still, I hear birding can be good in both places ...

The reason to go to the Drachenfels are its Rock Buntings: in the vineyards just north of Rhöndorf near Bad Honnef (the area just north of Weinhaus Domstein is best).

Unfortunately Cirl Bunting is gone (on my list for the location: Zipp-, Zaun-, Zwergammer).

I think last Cirl Bunting record must have been 2020 there. Anyway good chances for Rock Bunting (Weinbergtürmchen) and several scarce species e.g. Serin, Common Raven and different Raptors.

Iam also rarely in the Wahner Heide. Went for the Melodious Warbler in herfeld the last time. But pretty much the whole area is good for things like Red-backed Shrike, Honey Buzzard Woodlark and Stonechat for example.
