this one: http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=235438&d=1262424061 is pretty interesting and in fact most probably (actually i have little doubts) a pontic gull - but one with almost adult like scapulars and very abraded coverts. look at its structure, it's a long legged, long necked bird with a cach bill, pale GC tips, a white head with a shawl around hind neck.
also there's a compagnion fro 28.11. dambovita - compare this one:

it's the same old 2cy buddy (look at it's bill pattern and placement of moulted coverts and scaps) that was said to look like a herring gull.
cheers,
Thanks for the post regarding that 1st winter YLG, Lou. It is indeed an odd bird. Scaps - 3rd gen, of course, apologies. The only thing I'm nor 100% sure about is 'which gull shows a pronounced hindbelly'; perhaps it is one of those features that is not particularly helpful as a feature as it may or may not be shown by each species? Happy to discuss further.
I thought the same about the advanced 1st winter gull photographed by Cristian, ie, it's a Pontic.
Also, that 2nd winter YLG is scary! I would certainly overlook that as a Herring here in Dartford.
Happy New Year to all!
Cheers,
Andy.
