thanks mick, happy new year and good gulling 2013 to you - that male shows very well the typical sillhoette of male caspian, so different to herring gull B

Happy New Year Lou, and to all ...
It had me convinced in the field, but had problems with the short tarsus and thick legs ...
I couldn't get good views in the field so had to rely on images once home ...

pfew, actually that could be a hybrid - p5 mark is incomplete and p6 mark very thin...

Also no grey tongues on the outer primaries. I watched this bird for some time and showed pics to other birders who were glad that they didn't find it!
Mick and myself decided at the time that the size (it's small), short bill, short, thick tibia, thick neck streaking at the base of the neck and short wings all pointed to Herring.
But that beady, dark eye high of the head does suggest a Caspian influence somewhere in its past.

Well if i get one even remotely close i will be amazed !!
So here go's
1 .. Brown-Headed Gull ~ ad
2 .. Pallas's Gull ~ ad
3 .. Armenian Gull ~ 1st. cy
4 .. Caspian Gull ~ ad
5 .. Yellow-Legged Gull ~ 3rd. cy
Technically i've got all five right as i guessed that they are gull's !!!
Just to come close with one of them ...

no. 4 is a pitfall, look at no. 5
by the way, since you say 3cy in no. 5, you got to specify if 2nd or 3rd cycle and then show me a 3rd cycle YLG with that pattern ooo

I really had no clue with No: 5 now i've looked again even the grey tone isn't YLG ...

if i had seen no.4 i'd also have said adult caspian gull, but it's the same ind. like in no.5 o

post 2579 (catfish slaughter in herastrau park):
1. 2nd cycle cach (p10 tongues large)
2. another 2nd cycle cach (where are it's p10 tongues???) chased by a 3rd cycle type cach
3. yet another 2nd cycle chased by (another?) 3rd cycle, prob. same 3cy.
4. 2nd cycle cach chased by an adult type micha with all white p10 tip.
5. 3rd or even 4th cycle micha
post 2581:
2nd cycle cach(?) - anything separating it from a same aged micha with large p10 tongues? with adult micha
post 2584 - a rather classic female (?) type cachi with a bit of red on upper mandible?

Hi folks, any comments on the ID of this 2CY Gull seen today in Northern England. Is it a YLG or an Argie or even a hybrid-type?

hi pete,
jizz of this bird is clearly herring. but ID is not at all easy, on water and with little detail visible. definitely an odd ind. but looks to be an argenteus. scaps are not good for YLG as are head and bill shape...
