'Half a million birds threatened by Bulgarian Wind Farm' (1 Viewer)

This case has been before the European Court of Justice, who ruled against the State of Bulgaria for not designating this area as a Special Protection Area:
http://curia.europa.eu/juris/docume...=en&mode=lst&dir=&occ=first&part=1&cid=898545

The Court found that the wind farm would cause "...significant disturbances and deterioration to the habitats of protected species of birds..." and therefore, "by approving the implementation of the projects ‘AES Geo Energy’, ‘Disib’ and ‘Longman Investment’ in the territory of the important bird area covering the Kaliakra region which was not classified as a special protection area, although it should have been, the Republic of Bulgaria has failed to fulfil its obligations under Article 4(4) of Directive 2009/147"

Note that the AES Geo Power Wind Park is monitoring bird collisions and has a radar based shutdown system in place - http://www.aesgeoenergy.com/site/images/Bird Migration - Autumn 2012.pdf

This is the wind farm north of Cape Kaliakra.

Interesting, thanks for posting the report. One Griffon found dead is unfortunate, given how few were recorded in total. I wonder if it was the Croatian ringed one? The majority of bird corpses were species like House Martin and Blackcap. I was told that power lines are thought to be responsible for large numbers of deaths of these types of migrants too.
