I am originally from Liverpool and moved to the new town of Skelmersdale in Lancashire, back in the early 70's. We used to get large flocks of House Sparrows and Greenfinches back in those days and nowadays those Sparrows are almost non existent. The Greenfinches are also much reduced and have taken to travelling with our local small flock of Goldfinches. I firmly believe that the two types of Finch have been interbreeding and today l spotted an apparent hybrid sunning itself in our small conifer tree. It was mainly light brown with gold bars on the wingtips and a typical Goldfinch pattern on the tail. Researching the possibility of this event has led to me joining this forum. If l ever manage a decent photo of this bird l will share it. We have had a trio of Bullfinches visit in recent years but no sightings this year. We have a Wren, Nuthatches, Chaffinches, Hedge Sparrows and Blackbirds along with some pesky Wood Pigeons. l once had the good fortune to observe a Sparrowhawk on my patio, defeatherering a Wood Pigeon before eating it. We have also sighted Buzzards in the area (always very high up).

Welcome paganmorph, we live just up the road from you, just North of Blackpool. We still have plenty of sparrows in our garden plus Gold Finches, they say the Goldfinch is the new 21st Century sparrow there are that many of them around these days. We also have a pair of Sparrowhawks who visit our garden and always seem to catch a pigeon, or Collared Dove, last year one caught a Woodpecker in our garden, I managed to get quite a few photos of it, some I have posted in the Gallery section if interested Media added by ChrisMc1957 . Anyway, there is a very big and very knowledgeable crowd/memebrship here, so feel free to join in with the discussions and post photos as and when you can.

Hi paganmorph and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I don't really know your area too well, but did once go to Martin Mere, which was great.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
