Help does anybody know?? (1 Viewer)

Any idea what size it was? I'm getting the impression of a bird of prey. The color pattern reminds me of a gyrfalcon, which would be extremely unusual in England unless it's an escapee from a falconer's menagerie. That would be a remarkably big bird.

Hello,

welcome to Birdforum!

agree with Nartreb:
Do you have more pictures?

The choice is between a Hen Harrier or a rwe Pallid Harrier or a Gyrfalcon(hybrid, then surely an escape).
Its no Harrier imo, due to bodyshape, upright stance (yes, a single picture cant judge this) and pale upperparts with chequered pattern on scapilars/wing-coverts.
Adding the appearent timidy, lack of shyness?), and the chequered pattern and the appearwnt lack of a starring yellow eye (I think this would be visible here), I think its some kind of an hybrid Falcon of the Gyrfalcon typ.

Any chance this is a very pale 2CY Common Buzzard, or even a very much bleached out photo of a light Buzzard.

Harrier or falcon would give a different head impression, i would think
Cheers

I don't think very pale Buzzard works - it's surely too pale (attached photo one). And bleached photo of Buzzard doesn't work for me, because all the other colours look natural in the original photo And when darkened the bird is still white, but the background isn't (attached photo two). Is leucism a possiblity? On the other hand, the face gives a Harrier vibe to me. And I could go with a bleached photo of a bird that was very pale to begin with, so the apparent strong contrast between the wings and the head and chest might be a bleaching effect. And if that's a bit of the tail we can see behind the bird (perhaps not) then it's black.

for what it is worth, now it does look like a bewildered aviary bird to me..some big falcon it appears to be.
A video might give some extra info, otherwise it might be wise to just leave it at 'probable aviary falcon spec.'

cheers,
G
yes, i get the same impression of a white gyrfalcon sitting on the ground...
location also makes escaped falconers bird likely, though with these photos we´ll never be 100% sure
