Help identifying large gray bird in Rota, CNMI (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone,

I recently spotted a large bird on Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands, and I’m having trouble identifying it. I managed to take a photo, which I’ve attached for reference.

Description:

• The bird was entirely gray, resembling a stone or a gargoyle in appearance.
• It was quite large, larger than what I’d expect for a juvenile seabird.
• It had webbed feet, which were quite noticeable.
• The overall posture and look were strikingly statuesque.

I’ve checked photos of common birds in the area like Brown and Red-footed Boobies, Great Frigatebirds, and Pacific Reef Herons, but none seem to match exactly, especially with the uniform gray coloration and size.

Any insights or suggestions on what bird this might be would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

With re-processing, I can see a vaguely pinkish bill and feet; that combined with the breast band makes me conclude immature Red-footed Booby.

Thank you for your reply! After looking at some juvenile red-footed booby photos, it does seem like that would be what I had seen. Thank you again!
