Honeycreeper on Big Island (1 Viewer)

Aloha,
I’m on the Big Island to see a Honeycreeper and simply can’t afford the bird tours. (I’m a kindergarten teacher visiting Hawaii on a grant to learn more about flowers, plants, trees, mental health, & birds…especially the Honeycreeper.) Any ideas where I might see this beautiful bird on my own?

Welcome to Birdforum.

If you ask in the Information Wanted board you might get some help

Or there maybe some help in the Hawaii board

Aloha Mrsm and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. Do you mean the species Apapane - BirdForum Opus Which is/was a common honeycreeper on Big Island. If you click on the link for Hawaii in that article, it will take you to a page with links to many articles which have been written by our members on places to visit and will probably tell you where it is best to look.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. You might also check with the local Audubon Society for information.

eBird is your friend here. You should try looking for locations on there that don't appear to be restricted access (you do have to do your own research though). Never been to Hawaii, but off the top of my head I know the Palila Forest Discovery Trail is open to the public.
