Ended September/October with 295 species, my second best year already after 2018...

September 9
After a nice morning birding with a local group, I went out searching for a continuing Limpkin that has been spotted in the area. And it was a great spot, my first time seeing it in North America.

Pennyfield Lock, C&O Canal, Potomac, Maryland, USA
277. Limpkin (+)

September 11

Went birding for a few hours in Toronto yesterday, after a day full of meetings, and am finding it increasingly difficult to add to my year list. That said, did spot me a lifer that had been long overdue.

Ashbridge's Bay Park, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
278. Trumpeter Swan

September 17

Great morning out birding with a local group of excellent birders and together seeing 36 species, including two lifers: the Grasshopper Sparrow and the Black-throated Green Warbler. Then drove more than four hours roundtrip to rural Pennsylvania to see a continuing, very wet and drippy American Flamingo, and a beauty all the same. A great day for birding.

Woodstock Equestrian Park, Dickerson, Maryland, USA

295. Red-breasted Nuthatch

Latest lifer: #942 - Little Swift (Movenpick Hotel, Marrakech, Morocco)

New birds are becoming harder to find, but waterfowl are starting to move in so I’m hoping I can pick up some ducks, geese, and swans that I missed last winter.

Although not part of the waterfowl family, I did find one new year bird this morning.

571. Double-crested Cormorant

Can’t believe it took me this long to see one. Cormorants are scarce at the higher elevation where I live, but I usually see several a year, from early in the year (as long as there’s open water) through the end of the year.

I had a bit of a dry spell but finally had a great day this week and was able to add a couple of species I hadn't seen locally since March 2022.

485. Little Bustard
486. European Golden Plover

I had a couple of rarities this morning, including a self-found absolute mega.

572. Sandhill Crane
573. Pacific Loon

The crane was just over the state line in Maryland (I wanted it for my county year list, but just missed by a couple hundred yards).

The loon was only the second record of the species for West Virginia and the first for Preston County. A state and county lifer. What a day.

232. Rock Sparrow

Visited Villafáfila near Leon today to try to find some new birds. Unfortunately, the weather was against me with pretty heavy fog. I only managed one lifer and no additional year ticks.

This would have been easy to tick off when I'm in England next month, but much nicer to get it here in Madrid where it's uncommon (unless you count the escaped that's been living in the city centre for a couple of years!).

487. Eurasian Wigeon

Another British tick - another Tern! This time the Dorset Forster's Tern, followed by Wood Sandpiper and Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and a change of venue with a trip to a very scorched Southern Spain: White Stork, Griffon Vulture, Spotless Starling, Booted Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Serin, Crag Martin, Spanish Sparrow, Blue Rock Thrush, Short-toed Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Crested Lark, Kentish Plover, Audouin's Gull, Zitting Cisticola, Montagu's Harrier, Black Wheatear, Rock Bunting, Chough, Rock Sparrow. Thekla Lark, Southern Grey Shrike, Black Stork, Red-rumped Swallow, and Crested Tit. A few back in the UK: Barnacle Goose, Lesser Scaup, Surf Scoter, Willow Tit, Grey Phalarope. 234. There may still be a few more, but not many I think.
