Hello

I found this specimen on a riverside fencepost yesterday.

I'm stumped, as I don't even know whether it's a sawfly or a bee or a wasp!

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Paul

Many thanks aeshna5 and KC Foggin for having a look at this "oddity".

Although I haven't managed to find another image of a bedraggled Halictus rubicundus for comparison purposes, I'll take your collective word for it!

Regards

Paul

I don't believe it's a Halictus, I think it's an Andrena, the basal vein in the specimen in your photo is straight (as it should be in Andrena) not curved as it would be in Halictus or Lasioglossum. It looks much more like Andrena bicolor or may even be A. clarkella or A. nigroaenea

Certainly not Halictus, lacks the furrow on T6. Red hind tibia rules out nigroaenea or bicolor but fits well with clarkella.

Thanks for the additional comments WalterRayle and Ficedula.

To a bee ignoramus like myself, Andrena clarkella certainly seems like a good fit, with the correct forewing venation and plenty of hair on the thorax (as shown in attached snippets).
