My daughter saw this hawk today and it seems most like a Cooper's (tail with bars and white rounded tip) but the head on this bird is solid brown, not finely striped. The feathered legs seem distinctive but I don't find a photo like it in my field guides.

Many fine bands in the tail, no pale bands in the secondaries (which would be a Red-shouldered mark) - Red-tailed.
 
Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. The white scapular marks are often describe as "back straps."

I note that it has a band on its right Tarsi. (or is that Tarsus?) Someone must be tracking it. If you see it again maybe you can read the ID # on it?

First I have to say "great picture"!

I get Cooper's in my backyard all the time. I might have thought the same thing. But ya, noticed the difference in the color on the head. Interesting. I'm a new birder so I myself am learning a lot from these threads! Thanks for sharing :eat:
