I'm thinking of buying a pair of Leitz Trinovid 8x40 binoculars from a friend. Serial no is 747910, marked Germany, 128m/1000m. Any idea date of manufacture , how they perform against newer Leica Trinovids and also what I should pay second hand. They are in good condition. For some reason there seems to be very little info on the Leitz 8x 40 Trinovids. Any reason for that? Thank you.

Your serialnumber needs 6 figures but looks like 1972/1973.

We sell them, In good condition, round 500,00 euro with full shop warranty. That means Ex VAT 415,00, so if I would buy it my price would be round 300,00 euro's.

Thanks Jan, very helpful. Any thoughts on how they compare with the modern Leica branded equivalent in terms of performance? My other option is to save up abit more money and get something upmarket.

OK, these are collectors items.
Consider them as Porsches from the early seventies. In all honesty, a Chinbin round 500,00 euro's beats the good old Trinnie.
But...... this good old Trinnie keeps its value, something the Chinbin doesn't.

Having said all this: what you don't see, you don't miss.
There will always be a better bin where you could have seen it and again, above that is a better bin etc. etc..

Thanks. Early 70s Porsche works for me every time. Depending on price, I'll give these some serious consideration.

Dear Jan, I found this post and was wondering if you could give me information (prod. year, value) for a pair of Leitz binoculars. Leitz 7x42B Trinovid, serial number 851188, Portugal.

Thank you, Karl

I bought mine new in 1981 and it was made in Portugal. Saw one like it at the 'Pawn Stars' pawn shop in Las Vegas a few years ago for $ 1100.00. Similar to what I paid new, but that seemed wildly inflated to me. I'd figure $ 500 for a pair in good condition and without optics scratches, etc.

I'm just going to jump in here and wish you a warm welcome :)

Hello and welcome (belatedly) to kebbmo too.

Jan hasn't shown up here lately, and this question seems to have got lost, but someone should be able to answer it.
