Injured juvenile barn swallow (1 Viewer)

Hello! A juvenile barn swallow was found on the ground at a horse farm. It was trying to fly up onto a concrete area, but couldn't because the concrete area was too high (only about 2 inches). Upon investigation, the bird's wings were injured, with the flight feathers on the halves of the wings closest to the body, missing (the shafts were present). The outer feathers were fine. How do we help the bird? Will it be able to be fed insects and worms? (I know they primarily eat insects.)

Hi Pipzephyr and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds.

It sounds like he may have been attacked by a cat or similar so may well need antibiotics if there are any puncture wounds... very difficult to find so really needs to be checked by a professional. Most vets will provide emergency care for wildlife for free or try and find a local rehabilitor, they will know what to do and how/when is best to release him.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
