Not to mention if you are on a beach calling out birds. Like how the hell would Fairy Tern versus Fairy-tern sound different. I'm guessing existing Aussie birders often just go with Fairy Tern not adding the modifier.
I wouldn't bet against Aussie birders, when appropriate, bellowing out "Fairy (F******-hyphen) Tern"... Of all the English-speaking nations when it comes to richly-inventive swearing and deploying it imaginatively, the Aussies are in a league of their own...!

Maybe so, but this website is run by a Canadian: Effin' Birds

Step it up, Australia!

Look, I think the one thing everyone can surely agree on, especially in today's political climate, is that the good ol' US of A should be the one making this decision on behalf of the rest of the English-speaking world.

You're welcome. And, now that I think of it, when was the last time you said "Thank you, USA, for all your superb decisions on our behalf"?

[extreme sarcasm, in case it wasn't howlingly obvious.]

I think it is also a very good comment to the threads about recent renaming North American birds for diversity / patriotic reasons.
