Latest IOC Diary Updates (83 Viewers)

I understand that they are reverting to the consensus treatment. My point is that their justification for this change is that Perplexing Scrubwren is a hybrid swarm, which is not compatible with lumping said hybrid with one of the parental species without also lumping the other parent, in this case Tropical Scrubwren. If it truly is “considered by most authorities to be a stable hybrid”, why not treat it as such?
Historically there's been a variety of opinions of what subspecies comprise Perplexing Scrubwren. Clements always included only virgatus and jobiensis, whereas IOC also included pontifex et al. (from Tropical Scrubwren). It seems that this change is also agreeing upon moving pontifex to Large Scrubwren, but anyway I'm not familiar with why any of the historical realignments took place, but it looks to me like separating those scrubwrens into "species" has been a difficult task.

Dec 19 Re-lump White-bellied Whipbird with Black-throated [Western] Whipbird.

"White-bellied Whipbird Psophodes leucogaster (including lashmari) is re-lumped (15.1) with Black-throated [Western] Whipbird P. nigrogularis in face of only minor morphological and vocal differences and weak genetic divergence (Dickinson & Christidis 2014; del Hoyo & Collar 2016; HBW/BirdLife; WGAC 242. See Joseph 2021)."

hi all,
weekly update on changes in IOC 15.1 vs Gusasp's predicted list below. As before so far this has been a very reliable indicator of coming changes with only 2 changes in 15.1 that haven't been on the list (Amaui split and Mouse-coloured Tyrannulet lump).

In terms of the IOC list the changes amount to 141 species lost to lumps, of which 29 have already been announced, and 18 species gained as a result of splits, of which 5 have already been announced.

There are several possible additional overlooked splits on the way however e.g. 5x Purple Swamphen spp., Balearic Shearwater, Hooded Crow, Stejneger’s Stonechat.

I have started adding English names but it's a work in progress

cheers,
James

I would like to know who they will be lumped with and why.

Why is something that'll probably need to be answered whenever the IOC gives their reasonings but this Should be the list of what things get lumped into that haven't been listed yet based on other checklist, listing by common names in IOC:

@gusasp I preferred your comment sorry 😂

But lumped stejnegeri with maurus is contrary to its phylogentic position and Elaenia albiceps seems to correspond to two clades.

There are many lumps that are there only for alignment with AviList but which do not match with phylogenetic reality

Also, I sort of wish the large scale lumping hadn't been saved for the end. People are generally going to deal with changes in taxonomy of this nature when better when they are a bit more spread out (the frog in the boiling water analogy basically). A massive lump that is likely to severely impact a lot of people's lists is likely to leave a bad taste in people's mouths when the Avilist finally arrives

IIRC (and without double-checking), if Cape Verde is lumped, it's probably going to be transferred instead to Long-legged Buzzard. IIRC genetic analyses show it is more closely related to that taxon than Common Buzzard
Oh yup, you're right, it is getting lumped with Long-legged Buzzard, that was a mistake on my end.

and Elaenia albiceps seems to correspond to two clades.

Could you clarify on this one? I don't know the full phylogenetic status, just that this is a species I've seen so am curious

I'm still gutted about Arctic Redpoll.

I don't really care about splits or lumps. I'm gutted about seeing the diversity of checklists go away.

And I'm gutted about being served absurdities like this (sorry, Jan) :
[...] only upon a condition that everything that actually uses taxonomy for something uses the same list [...]
...which we will no doubt be served everywhere in the near future.

Elaenia albiceps seems to correspond to two clades.

There are many lumps that are there only for alignment with AviList but which do not match with phylogenetic reality

I agree that quite a few of the proposed lumps make little sense, but I wonder if this is a draft and some of the lumps are meant to realign the checklist with an older version of SACC? The Dubusia carrikeri split is now a done deal with SACC and the Dacnis egregia split also seems to be going that way. I'm guessing any proposal to split Elaenia chilensis would also pass pretty smoothly given the genetics and vocalizations. So maybe the lumping isn't going to be as drastic as it seems?

But overall I agree with Laurent, I think there is great value in having multiple checklists.

I have...mixed feelings...about whether multiple checklists are always good.

I absolutely believe that as far as taxonomy goes, its important that at least Birdlife, Clements/ebird, inaturalist, and similar public data projects should have a common checklist and agree on specific/subspecific taxonomy. Because if everyone uses something unique, it makes the data harder to use for researchers and those performing conservation assessments. There are real world impacts on data quality

I'm less bothered by IOC...from a stateside approach, I think the only major source of bird information that uses IOC that I regularly check is wikipedia. from a birding perspective, multiple checklists might cause some confusion with different names/concepts used by different field guides (which is impossible to avoid anyway, as a field guide is almost always out of date anyway after a few years due to changes in classification) and list totals, the latter not being important at all.

Basically I think a diversity of viewpoints is good, until that diversity actually interferes with things like conservation status assessments or data quality from sources like ebird or iNaturalist. I would have been perfectly fine if IOC (alongside Howard and Moore which of course isn't directly part of the reconciliation), kept doing its own thing, and just birdlife and Clements/ebird reconciled taxonomies
