I think the warnings for the NL were not for the glass.

Thorium glass presented more problems than lead.

With regard to items like binoculars, I suspect most of these "warnings" stem from product liability laws and arguably protect the manufacturers much more than the consumers. It's an irony of capitalism. Don't worry, be happy.
