Nowadays all technological efforts are channeled to the roof system in binoculars under 56mm aperture! Instead, for larger binoculars, the only option is porro because the roof system does not allow you to have a normal interpupillary distance due to tubes with diameters larger than 56mm. The market for compact binoculars is won by the roof system, and the market for large binoculars is won by the porro system. This does not mean that there are no very good porro binoculars under 56mm aperture: Fujinon FMTR SX, Swarovski Habicht, Nikon SE, Nikon E2, APM ED
Often the roof system has a more complex optical formula than the porro system, for this has a light transmission disadvantage compared to the porro system. Let's not forget that the light transmission record is held by a porro-type binoculars. Everyone knows what binoculars are about ...Swarovski Habicht. I have to admit that there is also Zeiss HT, a very good representative of the roof system, which also has a very good light transmission, but it is an exception that pays by a longer length thanks to Abbe– Koenig prism. We observe here that technological efforts are moving towards a compact roof system. This shows that with the same coating and glass quality, porro system could have been potential optically over the roof system, but technological efforts are moving with predilection towards a compact roof system. It is normal for the market of small binoculars to be the roof system winner, for a more compact and watertight body.
