Headed out early this morning to Hughes Hollow, a great birding area visited by many locals. Was on the lookout for a continuing Anhinga, which would have been a lifer, but unfortunately I did not see.

That said, I was happy to see 38 species together with other birders, including two new lifers - a very small Least Bittern hiding under some lillies at the water's edge, and several Prothonotary Warblers. Great morning out in the woods.

A very productive morning, searching for a Sora that has recently been spotted a mile away from my house.

Unfortunately I was not able to spot this small and shy rail but I picked up three lifers in less than an hour...

It's hard to believe Northern Waterthrush are Parulid warblers - saw my first (and only) a couple of years ago in Colombia and was amazed how pipit-like they were in behaviour as well as appearance.

A sizeable layover at Zurich Airport en route to Dubai. There are so many raptors flying overhead that the airport employs three hunters... One of the world's great airports, including for the fact that it has a great public obversation deck on the roof, adjoined by the Swiss lounge, which all makes for comfortable viewing, even for the weary- and bleary-eyed. Saw five species, including two lifers!

Trekked out to Ra's al-Khor Wildlife Sanctuary today. Very few birds given the time of year, and only one of the three entrances open due to construction. But always a sight to behold 100+ greater flamingos.

Had a great day birding with Lars Buckx (of www.dagjeindenatuur.nl), exploring the beautiful Oostvaardersplassen in the Flevoland province of The Netherlands. Despite it being rainy during parts of the day we saw 90 different species, including 12 lifers! Some of these I definitely should have seen before, but happy to add them to my list...

Water rail, grasshopper warbler and bittern are not always easy additions even for European based birders - the first two gave me the slip on numerous occasions when I first started birding in my youth. I concur with @Owene - I'd be very happy with that list for a day's birding!

I’ve not got willow tit. grasshopper warbler or lesser whitethroat this year or last year. And marsh warbler would be a lifer for me.

I know. I was with an incredible guide for seven hours. It was a great day. 90 species was awesome.

I was also born and raised in Amsterdam (have a Dutch passport), and have lived in Brussels, London and Norway. So not entirely foreign to birding in Europe either...
