May Moths - 2014 (1 Viewer)

Still waiting for a busy night out and about this year but continuing to plug away.

21 species to 4 MV's run for a couple of hours and 3 battery-operated actinics overnight the same night seemed very hard work on Saturday 3rd May especially as four of those species were netted whilst setting up!

19 species to 3 battery-operated actinics the following night was again pretty typical for the year to date but perhaps a better reward for considerably less effort. I suppose that it's still early in the season yet!

A bucculatrix from 3rd remains to be confirmed and could prove interesting. I'm struggling on that one a touch.

Year ticks this month have been Silver-ground Carpet, Elachista argentella, Oak Hook-tip, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Monopis weaverella, Common Wave, Aspilapteryx tringipenella, Common White Wave, Clouded Border, Chocolate-tip, Grey Birch, Pale Tussock, Poplar Hawkmoth, Scalloped Hazel, Little Thorn, Buff-tip, Common Carpet and Silver Y.

So the leps yearlist sits at 140 - 9 butterflies, 86 macros and 45 micros and the patch leps yearlist sits at 132 - 9 butterflies, 84 macros and 39 micros. Off to Scotland for the weekend so hoping for a few things that I have not seen for a long time.

All the best

Really struggling in the garden so far this year. Sunday night only held a Bright-line Brown-eye and a few Pale-mottled Willows. Nevermind, it can only get better!

Overnight 4-5.5 only two moths, a Nut-tree Tussock and this Birch Mocha (in an odd pose, just before wind blew it away!).

Put my new Robinson trap out last night. Too bright for a suburban garden and only got 4 moths: 2 shuttle-shaped darts and 2 light brown apple moths! Generator should arrive by the weekend so planning some night trapping in the beautiful sussex countryside.

Ken, your first moth is a Knot Grass. I love Iron Proms.

I am still really struggling for numbers this year.

5 moths last night - 3 Shuttle-shaped Dart and 2 Common-marbled Carpet! The Carpet was my earliest record for this sp though.

Cheers Andy.....I've had a few IP's over the years, all with wings closed and looking a lot drabber than this individual, this was so bright with wings open! I didn't recognise it!...then the penny finally dropped.

I concur with numbers, I think the evening temperatures have been a bit on the low side, still high pressure forecast for middle of week..fingers x'd.

On Thursday before heading up to Scotland, a Mullein in the trap was a pleasant surprise.

Headed up to Scotland on Friday. Trapping conditions were challenging and resulted in only 14 species to 7 MVs and 3 actinics on Friday night, 26 species to 7 MVs on Saturday night and just 5 moths of 4 species to 3 battery actinics last night!

But with quite a few moth trappers around, a concerted effort by day and a bit of co-operation, I saw a total of about 60 species in all. (A few micros to check so that may go up by one or two.) Massive indebtedness to the tireless help of Tom Prescott at Butterfly Conservation and the RSPB staff at Loch Insh as always.

So year ticks in order were - Ringed Carpet, Narrow-winged Pug, Small Dark Yellow Underwing, Light Knot Grass, Argyroplace arbutella, Stictea mygindiana, Ancylis unguicella, Incurvaria pectinea, Scarce Prominent, Glaucous Shears, Ochreous Pug, May Highflyer, Autumn Green Carpet, Acleris logiana, Carpatolechia proximella, Freyer's Pug (Edinburgh Pug), Puss Moth, Grey Pine Carpet, Ancylis myrtillana, Ocnerostoma friesei, Acleris hyemana, Common Heath, Netted Mountain Moth, Beautiful Yellow Underwing, Dark Tussock (larvae), Peppered Moth, Acleris notana, Scalloped Hook-tip, Pale-shouldered Brocade, Syndemis musculana, Satyr Pug, Diamond-back, Yellow-barred Brindle, Grey Scalloped Bar, Glyphipterix haworthana, Argyrotaenia ljungiana and Ruddy Highflyer.

So leps yearlist sits at 179 - 9 butterflies, 110 macros and 60 micros - and the patch leps yearlist way behind at 133 - 9 butterflies, 85 macros and 39 micros.

All the best

Finally!

Got some moths last night:

Common Marbled Carpet dominated the trap with 36 individuals (record high of that species for me).
Least Black Arches - 1
Herald - 1
SSD - 2
Brimstone - 2
Light Emerald - 2
Green Pug - 1

Andy M.

A few more new for garden last night, also numbers up -

Pale Tussock 3 (lifer)
Grey Dagger
Brindled Pug 4
Peppered Moth
Buff-tip
Sharp-angled Peacock
Brimstone
Flame Shoulder
Shuttle-shaped Dart
Brown Silver-line
Light Brown Apple Moth 2

plus a welcome reduction in Maybugs, from 9 to 1 - only got a small actinic trap, and I'm sure 9 of them blundering around would have hoofed off a few moths overnight!
