Look at the weight of the 200-400VR and you might think again - particularly if like me you carry a scope & tripod around too.

The 80-400 is not as slow now they've put a limiter on the AF and its much cheaper.

I'm just getting teh feel of it but these results suit me fine:-

Oddly enough, I received the 80-400 vr a few days ago. I can't judge it's AF speed on other cameras, but many have said it's faster on the D2x than previous Nikon models. Seems to be pretty rapid, and the focus limiter does help stop it going through distances that aren't needed.
Even with a 1.4x tc it's acceptable for static birds, though you'll need to up the ISO though, VR can only do so much... see attached thumbnail

cheers,
Andy

D70 & 80-400VR

I have the above combo & would suggest checking out the new D70-S, first. From what I've read, it has improved autofocus capabilities along with other significant improvements.

My greatest gripe is teh poor response in autofocusing with my 80-400VR. Sometimes it is fine, but, as Murphy's Law goes, when you wnat it to focus the fastest, it hunts like crazy.

Yes, the combo IS heavy, but no more than with my f/2.8 80-200. Gotta use a monopod on both.

Hi Blackdog,

I have a D70 and find it a great piece of kit. I dont have a great gallery of bird shots yet. I posted one shot of a Bateleur eagle in Scotland. You may like to view that thread under Rare Birds.

I use a Nikon 70 - 300 ED zoom which is a good lens. A bit hard to use on autofocus when you have a flying bird. At present I am exploring options for digiscoping. However I think most digiscopers tend to go for Nikon Coolpix 4500 or something similar.

Regards,

Richard
Try the swaro 800mm camera adapter for digiscoping. expensive but worth the money

This was my first attempt with a 135-400mm .
