Montrose Basin and the surrounding area (3 Viewers)

I should add, on the walk to the hide I spotted another covey of Grey Partridges, 5 this time, either last year was a good breeding season or someone is putting some on the ground. Nice to see whichever.

Had a beach comb on Lunan Bay in front of the bird hide, a lot of gulls, including a lot of Greater Black Backed amongst the Herring and also a lone Hooded Crow, these seem to be regulars round this area these days.

Whilst driving round Arbroath to Monifieth, back to Friockheim recently, keep seeing Kestrels, definite increase in sightings. We also have a resident on the edge of Inverkeilor

Hi Burnie, we are coming up to your area in early May staying near Carnoustie, anywhere that you consider a must go to area? I have the "where to watch birds in Scotland" App but any local info would be appreciated!!

At that time I like to be in the Glens, Cuckoos, Redstarts, Wheatears, Ring Ouzels, Lapwings, Curlews, Spotted Flycatchers, get up early Black Grouse, chance of an Eagle. Glen Esk, Glen Prosen, Glen Clova or Glen Doll are my favourites.
Over the Tay into Fie, Eden estuary(though better this time of year) and Morton Lochs/ Tentsmuir forest. Osprey to be found at Balgavies Loch and also at Kinnordy, where there are usually Marsh Harriers too.

Is Glen Prosen open again Burnie? The last I heard you could only get about half-way up.

My favourite glen is Glen Moy, much quieter than the well-known ones. It is shorter. It never lets us down with sightings. It's next to Glen Clova. Location Map.

I've seen 3 kestrels on separate occasions in the last week in the East Kilbride/Glasgow area.

Commented at the time that I don't remember seeing one for years before this. Maybe there's an ongoing recovery in numbers :D

Lunan beach walk this morning, 2 Greater Black Back adults and 1 juvenile with a couple of Herring Gulls. 3 Sanderlings, around 2 dozen Oyster Catchers a couple of small rafts of Cormorants and little else, sea very flat. A lot of ground works going on by the cottages near the Red Castle, equipment might have frightened birds away.

Sounds good thanks very much for the info!

Lovely walk in the sunshine around our fields, Rookeries are busy, Jackdaws building nests, Skylarks getting more warmed up with the singing and to top the lot some overhead wires full of farm birds, half a dozen or so Yellowhammers, similar number of Linnets and a dozen and a half Corn Buntings, which seem to be spreading north from their stronghold near Auchmithie.

Had a wander around Balgavies Loch, not a lot about, dozens of Greylag Geese surprisingly few waterfowl. A couple of Mallards, Coots a single Moorhen and a single Goldeneye, a couple of Mute Swans and around 50 Tufties. There's at least a dozen Cormorants on the island trees which told me the Ospreys have not yet returned as they usually chase them away from the nest area. A Brown Hare on the drive over and heard my first Chiff Chaff.
Forgot there was a pair of Bullfinches near the gate where the cherry trees are.

Sea watching for an hour on Lunan Bay, first Gannets I have noticed, most travelling north, must have been at least a mile off shore, still Eiders and Scoters in small rafts in the choppy water. A couple of Lesser Black Backed Gulls and large numbers of Herring Gulls and a couple of Oystercatchers and a lone Curlew on the wing.

Gosh! Wonder where that's come from? Perhaps the same source as the Forfar RND??
