Montrose Basin and the surrounding area (1 Viewer)

Nice wander round the village fields, 4 Yellowhammers, a lot of singing Skylarks, a female Reed Bunting, Wren, Chaffinch and six rather late on parade Fieldfares(though the rivers and lakes in Finland are only just melting, so perhaps they aren't so late). Pheasant calling in the distance, Rookery in full voice and the Greenfinches seem to be back in the village in some numbers.

Montreathmont forest visit briefly today, a bit quiet this time of year, Male Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Siskin along with Blue, Coal and Great Tits, Blackcap and Goldfinches on the track. A Red Squirrel popped into say hello, saw three Brown Hare leverets and a couple of adults on the way home.

Had a wander to Scurdie Ness lighthouse, hoping for a sight of one of the Red Backed Shrikes, but none to be seen. Sea flat calm, very distant rafts of Kittiwake's and Auks and a few young Eiders close in. Rock Pipits, Skylarks in profusion, a couple of Linnets and Whitethroat, nice day for a walk.

Back to Montreathmont today, rather hot and bright with very little about, but wanted to check on the Woodpeckers nest, all is well. Usual stuff in there, Robin, Dunnock, Vole(not sure which to fast to tell), Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackbird, Chaffinch and an obliging Yellowhammer.

We have Swifts in the village, at least 5 though kinda tricky counting 'em, Swallows and House Martins too, all of which were few and far between last year.

Called in at Montrose Basin (Lurgies) this afternoon, the bridge at Bridge of Dun is closed so a detour through Montrose was required.

Common Sandpiper, Goosander (one with a brood), Common Sandpiper, Linnet, Yellowhammer and Grey Heron by the car park. A few dozen Shelduck and two Curlew visible from that end. Was told a Curlew Sandpiper was recently seen.

Singing male Corn Bunting by Boghead Pool between Montrose and Arbroath a few days ago.

Our wander round the fields was quite a good one today, began with two Swifts flying over the village, then three House Martins and finally half a dozen Swallows(the Sand Martins nest in the river banks the other side of the village, none seen today). A wren shouted at us as we wandered up the path, with two Yellowhammers singing on the power lines, a Linnet and a rather wild Blackbird were also on the wires No Sedge Warblers today but we did hear White Throats in the thick scrub, whilst I ate the first of the wild Raspberries, not really ripe yet, looks like a good year for Blackberries this coming autumn. A Buzzard was seen in the distance as we returned to the chorus of the village House Sparrows.

Had an hour watching the sea/beach at Lunan Bay, not expecting to see Greylag Geese on the beach! A few Greater Black backed Gull, Black Headed and Common Gulls, quite a few Terns, too far away to see which type. Cormorants and Eiders out at sea with a couple of Gannets. Quite a lot of Swallows, House Martins and the odd Sand Martin, hunting insects over the beach. Two pairs of Stonechats in the sand dunes along with a Rock Pipit.

I had a very quick visit from one a couple of weeks ago. Only seen a couple of them in the garden over the years.

The Magpie was back this morning, I spotted it in my neighbour's tree, which is close to our garden. He was feeding on the honeysuckle berries (I think), and having a good time preening. A Jackdaw was keeping an eye on him LOL.

I thought we were going to have one, but we just got the torrential rain!
