A little pond that could!

Took my mountain bike for a ride this morning to Kil-cona
Park.Lots of bird activity especially at a little pond where I
frequently bird.Seems all sorts of species were hawking
insects here!Counted 32 species here including four types
of swallows,Tree,Barn,Cliff and Bank!Lots of warblers were
flycatching and seen my first Baltimore Oriole,Western
Kingbird and Caspian Tern at the pond. The Caspian Tern
caught a fish here and ate it in flight! Birded other parts of
the park but soon the park was full of off leash dogs .I
left after one dog was quite threatening and I had to get off
my bike to protect myself.Owner had no control of his dog.
Then went to a pond across the highway were hundreds of
Franklin's Gulls were feeding on something on the surface of
the pond!New here was a Lesser Yellowlegs and after
studying the birds for a while two Forster's Terns.
Also forgot to mention that two Red-tailed Hawks were calling
across the park, think their nesting here. This hawk has
evaded me so far this year should have seen way earlier than
this.In the same area pretty sure I heard a LeConte's Sparrow,
right habitat but my hearing is lousy, so a no go for my list!

New,

117.Western Kingbird
118.Barn Swallow
119.Bank Swallow
120.Cliff Swallow
121.Caspian Tern(rare in city environs)
122.Red-tailed Hawk
123.Lesser Yellowlegs?
124.Baltimore Oriole
125.Forster's Tern
126.American Redstart

Photos taken today,W.Warbler,A.Redstart,B.Oriole overexposed
W.kingbird:eek!:,Caspain Tern with fish in its mouth!

The lawns were awash with sparrows today!

Went to work this morning on a holiday:t:.At 6:00a.m while
waiting for my ride there was all sorts of sparrows feeding on
the lawns in the vicinity!Just was thinking if I would see this
species this year, narrow window of opportunity. What looked
like House Sparrows in the din turned into a Harris Sparrow,
in fact 7 of them.Probably more but unfortunately my ride
arrived!|=@|I also identified lots of White-crowned's in the mix.
Probably more species in there!I wish my boss was more tardy!8-P

127.Harris's Sparrow

Birding,photographing through my back window

Spent the evening looking through my back window at the
huge tree in my backyard to see what might show up!Cedar Waxwings
hung around for a bit,a few Nashville warblers dropped by,
a Swainson's Thrush rummaged around on the ground,
Chipping Sparrows chased each other,a flycatcher fluttered
around amongst the new leafs, and a nice
128.Grey-checked Thrush posed for a photograph.
Recorded a Swainson's Thrush singing, never hear that in the
city!Beautiful song to hear through the city din!

A little expense,a few birds

Assiniboine Park-5:30a.m to 9:30a.m

Left my house at 5:00a.m. and spent a few extra dollars to
get birding early at this park.Is a beautiful sunny day today
and I wanted to avoid the big crowds which sure enough by
8:00a.m. materialized. This is the most popular park in Winnipeg
and is very crowded on weekends! Was disappointed at the
bird movement .Seen less warbler species than last weekend,
12 species.Quite the walk though around the perimeter of the
park,5 kilometers.
Take heart I did see 3 new species,
129.Grey Catbird
130.Red-eyed Vireo
131.Warbling Vireo(heard than seen one later)

Some record shots of a Grey Catbird and Red-eyed Vireo,
