Dear Birdwatchers

We would like to present you a new book ”Birding in Poland”. It is the most comprehensive birdwatching guidebook describing Poland ever published.

Poland is the most obvious destination in Europe to watch and listen to Aquatic Warbler. Forests and coppices provide shelter for all species of European woodpeckers. Wetlands are an important stopover point for migrating waders, geese and other water and wetland birds, while wet meadows are a perfect location to hear rasping Corn Crake. The population of White Stork in Poland is counted amongst the largest in Europe.

This guidebook is both for those planning a longer birdwatching trip to Poland and for those visiting bigger cities for business, with only a few hours or half a day to spare for birdwatching. For them, we have described in more detail the sites in Warsaw and Kraków - the two cities probably most often visited by foreigners. We have also included descriptions of sites near other cities, such as Łódź, Poznań, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Lublin and Rzeszów.

The authors are 46 ornithologists, birdwatchers, and local avifauna experts from Poland. The volume provides a description of 119 sites and 164 maps. It includes such famous sites as the Białowieża Forest, the Biebrza River Valley and the Warta River Mouth, but also other sites, probably unknown but definitely worth visiting. The book also includes a general description of avifauna in Poland, practical tips on birdwatching and travelling around, a chapter on the legal aspects of birdwatching and two articles on Aquatic Warbler and White Stork, as well as photos of typical habitats and a checklist of the birds of Poland.

As you may see from my recent post, I am planning a visit to the area north of Szczecin in October. Does your book have any information on this area?

In Western Pomerania we have 5 sites described: Świna River Mouth (in the town Świnoujście), Karsiborska Kępa also near Świnoujście, Świdwie Nature Reserve (lake north of Szczecin), Dzwonowo Fishponds (east of Szczecin) and a large area of Lower Odra River Valley about 150 km long.

We used this book on our trip last week. We found the site descriptions on the Swina River Mouth and Karsiborska Kepa easy to follow and useful. Travelling east, the entry for the crane roost near Krakulice in the Slowinski National Park was not so good. We found the map in the book inadequate, and were told at the National Park office in Smoldzino that a permit to enter this area wasn't necessary to observe the birds.

As we couldn't find much information anywhere else on this area of Poland the book is a good starting point and we'd recommend it. For anyone visiting the Slowinski National Park, the office staff were very helpful and provided a detailed map. Don't confuse the nearby musuem with the office though. We didn't use the book for other locations in the area so can only comment on these 3.
