philomachus pugnax, never thought of that! broad bill and sharp tail in the same genus?? where does that leave pec sand?
 
It was a Ruff.

Ruff, Broad billed sand, Buff breasted sand, and Pec sand all fit into one large family, apparently. It's the Calidrad family. Upland sand is closely related to the Curlew family, Numenius, but is actually the only Bird in it's very own genus.

oh dear, these are hard, I'll have a stab at a whitethroat for number two, the others, I'll need to have a bit more of a think.
