Morning all,

Enjoying getting out round the patch (often from my doorstep) as the year comes to a close. Managed 120 species in Surlingham and South Yare Valley, which is my biggest total to date. Church Marsh however shows a slightly different picture, just 89 species making 2014 the leanest year here so far. Highlights across the patch were flyover Corncrake and calling Spotted Crake, Black and Arctic Terns at Rockland and passage Whinchats at Claxton. In terms of my year list, I am still missing Hen Harrier (annual until this year, often more than one bird) Short-eared Owl (has been reported from Claxton) and Brambling. Cannot believe I have not had Brambling! A wheezing call at Rockland aside on a windy day, no sign of this species in 2014.

I missed the Whiskered Tern at Rockland, which I am still recovering from. I continue to miss the Osprey that spends some of the Summer here, and still need Bittern, Jack Snipe and Water Pipit. Just thinking about that lot, and I can't wait to get started again in January.

Further afield, not such a great year for bird finding and looking back the peak days of birds being discovered were work days. Thanks to others for putting their news out and sharing their finds when they can, because of this I saw Great knot and Steppe Grey Shrike in Norfolk this year.

A busy year in all for me, with Stag and Wedding, bit of birding in Scotland and a Welsh mini-moon. Always nice to come back to Norfolk though, and having been out this morning and seen Kingfisher, Bullfinch and Teal after an evening of Wigeon and Pinks, this underlines what a superb county we live in when species like that are 'easy' and in such fantastic numbers.

Now, still time to find that Brambling and book flights to some faraway place before the year is out.

Merry Christmas all,
Jim.

Today's highlights

Water pipit - 1 on fresh marsh islands all day
Bittern - 1 in flight over reedbed
Spotted redshank - 1 on saltmarsh
Stonechat - 1 perching on bramble bushes on the grazing meadow
Barn owl - 1 hunting along East Trail this morning
Brambling - female on feeders late afternoon

Thank you for all your support for the reserve throughout 2014 and we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a bird-filled 2015

Paul

Mid-Yare highlights!

A great year in and around Strumpshaw: my 2014 mid-Yare list reached 165 while my UK year list peaked at 221. This included a couple of 'lifers': Spectacled Warbler & Steppe Grey Shrike, while I missed a couple I really should Knot have!

Still squeezing the best results I can from my Pentax K-30 and Sigma 50 - 500, but now realise I'll never compete with my photography chums Brian & Norman with their fabulous outfits.

Nice Christmas Day present in the form of a male Goodsander flying East along the Ware while I was sitting in the car waiting at lights right by the station!
It was fairly low but moving fast
A very surprising year tick for me!

Paul- thanks for your updates throughout the year. I only make it up to Titchwell once or twice a year, but it is still nice to know what is about.

Some nice pics there David. 165 A phenomenal total for Mid-Yare.

Sacha- presume your Goosander flew down the Yare rather than Ware, or perhaps you were spending Christmas elseware?!

Hope all on the thread are enjoying a nice break. Due some colder weather so maybe we will see more winter Thrushes, Redpoll etc.

Haven't been to Stubb Mill in yonks so plan to change that over the next few days. To those in the know- chances of Hen Harrier, RL Buzzard?

Cheers,
Jim.

Cracking day on the patch around Snettisham all on foot from home with a final tally of 103 species

All the common woodland birds in Ken hill including at least three Marsh Tit before watching the sea from the concrete sea defence of the coastal park with a raft of at least 95 Eider drifting north with the tide, easily the largest number I have seen from there before. Close Great Northern Diver only my 4th for Snett, all of which have done exactly the same, flying north out of the wash at least an hour after high tide plus a smart drake Goosander north and another group of 50 Eider.

Excellent views of a Merlin on the reserve catching and carrying a Dunlin over the mud flying in to feed on the beach plus the BNGrebe still in residence and a male Hen Harrier over the salt marsh and flying inland over the inner sea wall. Good numbers of Fieldfare moving south throughout the day with at least 692 in groups of up to 140.

Jim.

Good point Jim,
But I think I mean the Wensum!?
Anyway, directly opposite the station entrance and over the bridge leading up the start of Prince of Wales Rd.
Presumably from Whitlingham or UEA?

Pair of Stonechats (unringed) at Kelling Water Meadows this afternoon and a third sitting on the fenceline at Cley Coastugards!

Hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas break:t:

Full update on blog.

Excellent views of the 1st winter Glaucous Gull feeding on a freshly dead seal on the beach at Snettisham this afternoon. Flew off past the sailing club at one point but returned to gorge itself on seal blubber opposite Rotary hide late afternoon, hopefully won't be going anywhere in a hurry. Female Merlin still around plus ringtail Hen Harrier on the walk back home crossing the fields behind the inner bank heading for the salt marsh. Four Velvet Scoter and at least 140 Eider offshore from the Coastal Park this morning.

Brilliant Brecks

Spent a great few days over Christmas in the Brecks, highlite was seeing a Hen Harrier and a female Goshawk having a tussle in one field and Merlin running riot through a flock of 100+ Skylarks in the field behind me! Also seen Great Grey Shrike at Santon Downham (I know it's in Suffolk) a calling Long-eared Owl, 3 Goosanders, 20+ Whooper Swans, 2 Green Sandpipers, 4 Barn Owls, Bramblings and all the usual birds you would expect to see. Always great to visit my old stomping grounds - you gotta love the Brecks

Santon Downham: depends which side of the river, which forms the county boundary. North of the river is Norfolk, South of the river is Another Place.

It was north of the river, cheers Stew always thought the county border was further north than that, explains why I didnt pass passport controll :t:
