Norfolk Butterflies and Moths (2 Viewers)

3 pairs of Walls 'on the top' of Walsey Hills, late this morning.

A couple was being shamelessly frisky; I took a pornodopteral video. She (on the right) was all a-flutter with pent-up wo'evah.

First Red Admiral of the year for me at Wheatfen today with a worn and faded individual. Also Small Tortoiseshell, six Peacocks, five Orange Tips (two males) one Green-veined, two Large Whites and five Brimstones (all males).

I saw my first three Swallowtails of the year at Strumpshaw today. The first was a quick glimpse of one disappearing into the reeds on the Lackford Run but later we enjoyed prolonged views of two more in the little clearing between Marsh Cottage and the crop field. They were mainly feeding on pink Campion and, as there seems to be few nectar plants on the fen itself, I think the best policy could be to find some food plants and wait for the Swallowtails to appear.

Another small moth if anyone can identify it for me (don't think it's another Small Yellow Underwing but it could be - I'm pretty rubbish at id'ing small moths!). There were 2 of them at Taverham Garden Centre this afternoon in the aquatic plant section!!!

Hi Chris. I certainly recognised this instantly, but couldn't put a name to it. Thank goodness for the web; I think this is a Mint Moth.

Jim.

Nut Tree Farm area north west of Alburgh this morning - 3 Small Heaths, Red Admiral, Large White, 12 Small Whites, 3 Orange Tips, 7 Silver Ys, 2 Silver-ground Carpets and a Mother Shipton.

Small Heath- not seen many of those this year, just one, infact!

I turned up at Wheatfen today for a Sunday afternoon stroll and happened upon their busiest day of the year, Swallowtail day. Said Butterfly performed, I saw 3 or 4 including one at rest. Someone had found a fresh looking Elephant Hawk Moth by the track, always impressive. The reserve was buzzing today, I usually like the peace and quiet but lucked out with the guided walk really.

Cheers,
Jim.

Hello Jim.

Virtually all my records of Small Heath come from the coastal strip or inland heaths so I'm always pleased if I'm lucky enough to get one anywhere else. Getting three today felt like an influx!

Steve.

I visited Strumpshaw on Friday and had a couple of Swallowtails, Orange Tip, Peacock and Brimstone. My first Swallowails which was pleasing and even managed a couple of photographs.
