October moths - 2014 (1 Viewer)

Couple of strange moths to the trap this morning. Firstly, an extremely late straw dot and, secondly, this dark marked feathered thorn. Never seen one this shade before. Otherwise, regulars such as red-green carpet, green brindled crescent, satellite and red line quakers.
Is it just my trap or is black rustic very hard to come by this year? I've not had a single specimen yet
Cheers,
Jono

An increase in Black Rustics for us in Dartford compared to last year. 3 two nights back. Quiet last night although November moth type was NFG. Also a late Vine's Rustic.

First trap for 6 weeks and a new moth for me with 3 x Juniper Carpets, also a Figure of Eight, Light Brown Apple moth and a Brown House Moth.

Of 7 moths in the trap last night, Feathered Thorn was new for me, and a Beaded Chestnut was only my second-ever. Otherwise, CM Carpet, 2 Grey Pine Carpet, Black Rustic and Red-line Quaker.

4 more D.perspectalis last night! plus Feathered Thorn and November Moth....and still no M.du Jour! :(

Cheers

A good night for me last night, with 22 moths of 13 species, inc 3 new for me (Merveille du Jour - sorry Ken! -Green-brindled Crescent and Yellow-line Quaker), also Turnip, 3 Blair's Shoulder-knot and 2 Silver Y.

A couple of Delicate this morning to one of the garden traps and a second Crocidosema plebejana for the autumn - quite a local tortrix I believe.

All the best

I spent Saturday night at the Obs at Dungeness with a couple of other guys. A few of moths already in the fridge (Feathered Thorn and Palpita vitrealis) were both new for me.

Then from my trap overnight, we caught a good few Large Wainscot, Streak and Angle Shades with a Pearly Underwing and Silver Y on the migrant front. Black Rustic, Mallow and a few Lunar Underwing added to the totals. We also caught a Crocidosema plebejana as well as Plutella xylostella and Udea ferrugalis.

Later at the RSPB reserve we found a Caloptilia stigmatella.

Cheers,

Andy M

Visited a friend's trap earlier and had 3x Merveille du jour, delicate, vestal (yellow), black rustic, green brindled crescent, blair's shoulder-knot, pine carpet, azalea leaf-miner, Swammerdamia pyrella, and 3x large yellow underwings.

They had flame brocade and oak rustic earlier in the week, too bad I couldn't see those.

In Staffs this morning: 4 mottled umber, 4 red-green carpet, angle shades, 2 sliver-y, 2 Udea ferrugalis, spruce carpet, grey pine carpet and yellow-line quaker.

A new moth for me today. Was doing some gardening in town (Falmouth) when I disturbed 5 or 6 Bloxworth Snout in the alleyway next to the house - nice! Must be a local colony as pretty sure a friend caught one nearby in the summer.

Actually got the trap on for once in our garden, hopeful, but reality may well strike instead.
