Phalarope and Gull - Monterey Bay California (1 Viewer)

Hi looking for some help with these ones.

Red Phalarope? And no doubt the gull is obvious but it has me stumped.

The Phalarope looks like a Sanderling and the Larus looks like a 2nd/3rd year Western Gull.

Suprised to see 2 votes for sanderling,looks a pretty staraight forward Red(or Grey) Phalerope to me or am I missing something?
Seems to have yellow base to bill, dark wings against paler grey back black eye patch etc that all suggest Phalerope not Sanderling.

a red phal it is although the wide wing stripe in primaries is deceiving and prob. a photo artefact.
