Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32 (2 Viewers)

Interesting. Thanks for posting the thread bittern. I bought my EL 8x32 in 2018. I had noticed the armour was discoloured and scuffed in a way I would not have expected on bins only 5 years old. Then last week I discovered a crack about 6cm long on the side of one of the barrels! Similar to the picture SG Birder posted but not as extensive as his/hers. I have returned them to the company I bought them from and am told that they will be repaired (he said "serviced") under the warranty but it could take up to two months! This is my third pair of bins; the other two were Nikons and nothing like this happened to them even though I used them for many years. Have to say I am disappointed in Swarovski.

Edit: I have not used these bins in extreme temperatures and only in Europe.

Clearly Swarovski have got the armouring on these bins wrong.
They should recall them and fix the problem permanently and at no charge whatsoever to the customer.
I applaud them the for trying to be kind to the enviromet, but if I’d doesn't work it need to be fixed.

I just hope that when they re armour my bins the armour will be different to the original. There is no point doing the work with the duff armour that only lasts a few years.

Just sell them when you get them back and buy an SF 8X32. Maybe this will give you peace of mind.

Whenever you get them "serviced", lets us know how they fix them please. With same armour as bought or maybe some new materials.
I got an EL´s in 2021 so far no issues with the armour.

Maybe they can re armour them with Zeiss armour. That way they would last.

Very very unlikely. I asked Swarovski customer service this and their reply was that this is the "best" material. They did say they would forward my feedback to the product manager, so maybe you can write in abt the same issue too? That might prompt them to recognise this as an issue

My CL Companions are a little over two years old, and the armour started to develop cracks. First a small crack about 5 mm long appeared out of the blue about a week ago on the left barrel, which I reglued. Then a couple of days a go a really serious crack appeared on the right barrel. Not so long ago, the rubber cover on the focus wheel fell off, so it is now glued back on. No DEET, no suncream, no overexposure to heat. There are also a few other small problems that have gradually developed recently, they are definitely not as sharp as when new. They are going back to Austria as soon as I get a chance. What a load of cr@p!
Time to bring out the creme de la creme of birdwatching binoculars - clue: it is NOT made in Europe ;-)

I know but, surely the more photos that are posted showing the problem with the Swarovski armouring deteriorating quite quickly the better understanding we will have of the scale of the problem.

But what's the point if Swarovski maintains that this is the best material, even in the face of real-world feedback from their customers. (I've referred them to this forum)

No point in posting photos, but no doubt the rubber biodegrades quicker than it takes an albatross to rear it's chick!

Miles off! Ultravids are made in Portugal, which the last time I checked was still in Europe But no more on this, the thread will end off going in tangents if we start discussing the merits of different manufacturers. Enough to say that I am packing my Swaros ready to send in to be fixed.

I wish I had taken a photo of mine before sending them off for repair or 'servicing', depending on your point of view. Will post an update when I get them back.

One wonders if Swarovski have factored in the cost of replacing my all the failing armour and the emissions from all the shipping required, not to mention the damage to reputation and their bottom line. Unless the old stuff of literally leaching toxins into everything it touches it might have been best to leave as is…. No-one else (apart from canon - who it would seem have been leading in these environmental coatings for many years) seems to have an issue. Openness and more information might help, all companies can make bad calls sometimes.
