Question about editions of Shorebirds (Hayman, Marchant and Prater) (1 Viewer)

Hi

Does anyone know the difference between the hardback editions of this book?
As far as I can see (from amazon uk) there's a 1986 1st edition (cyan cover with 5 birds in flight) and a revised edition from 1991 (white cover with 4 standing birds, 2 in flight).

I bought a used copy online of what I thought was the latter (ISBN 0713635096 with a white cover), but what arrived has that ISBN but with a cyan cover. However, the copyright page has (c) 1986, Reprinted 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991.

So what have I got? Is this a revised edition or a reprint of the 1st edition? Are they the same thing?
I'm assuming the 1991 (white cover) edition was revised extensively. Is that right? i.e. should I be seeking out the 1991 edition.

All very pernickety questions, I know. But I'm wondering whether I need to send this book back.

As far as I am aware there was only ever one edition of this book, published in 1986. There were a number of reprints in succeeding years, with some additions and corrections, and a slightly different dust-jacket,but never a revised or new edition.

Hi

Tom is correct. The 1986 1st print was reprinted in 1987 with minor typo corrections. No further reprints (I have 1988, 1989, 1991, 1995 and 1998) were made with any corrections or other modifications to my knowledge. The white cover was purely a change in the cover. All the reprints I have, have a different ISBN

So, there has been no change in the text since the minor ones in 1987 and no revision. The information therein remains as in the original publication.

Hope this helps

Tony

Thanks very much for your replies, Tom, Dave and Tony. It's clear now.
So, I have a 1991 reprint, not a "2 Rev Ed" as the amazon site states.
Any road up, it's a great book!

Chris: A few months ago I went back & forth with Amazon over their characterization of Hilty's Birds of Venezuela as a second edition of A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela by de Schauensee & Phelps. In his acknowledgement Hilty certainly doesn't treat his work as a second edition, but to this day if you review one of those volumes your review shows up on both pages.

So far as I know this is correct. There was a 'revised edition' that was then re-released (which had a flash on the corner of the jacket).

All I can say really is the one that seems to be REALLY hard to get is the one with the white jacket (1991 reprint, I think). When I last tried to buy one it was literally impossible. But it does apparently exist, somewhere.
