Red Kites at Harewood (1 Viewer)

Come and see our kites!

Tom,
You're only an hour and a half from our Red Kites here in the Derwent Valley.
We have 80-100 in the core area, and we have high hopes for breeding success this year.
Have a look at our website www.friendsofredkites.org.uk

We could even arrange a personal Safari for you! And there are good B&Bs near, too.

Every Sunday in June and July we are having a Kite watch in conjunction with Gateshead Council; you'll see the details on the Events Page.

We had excellent sightings of the kites just inside the gateway to Harewood Hall (I'll see if I can find my BF photos!)

Absolutely memorable morning spent in the company of a DOZEN red kites near Harewood. I kept pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming! Not only were they spectacular in flight, but also came down to where 3 tractors were ploughing a huge field so they could pick up the worms that were being brought up to the surface. Just unbelievable. I filled 2 memory cards on my camera (12 GB in all) and am hoping I'll have got some good shots. Some of the flight shots, the kites were too close for my zoom lens and completely filled the frame!!! A day I'll never forget . . . who needs Gigrin Farm?
Tom

Went to weardley yesterday and saw 4 red kites, at first there was nothing but sure enough once we got moving they came to have a look at us. Unfortunately they didnt come particularly low and my lens only goes to 150mm so pics are nowhere near as good as Toms! Thanks for the location tips everyone, I will definately be going back.

Thanks June; just had a look at your excellent website, brilliant stuff. Great to see such dedication and care for these beautiful birds. Will definitely have to have a trip up north east in the not-too-distant future!
Kind regards,
Tom

Red Kites at Pool today

Does anybody know the best place exactly to see the Red Kites around the Harewood Estate area at this time of the year???

Thanks

Seven Red Kites quartering farmers newly mown field at Pool (by the bridge and near petrol station) this am. Next to road very spectacula, low down and following the tractor.

Plenty of great info already given. Just to add that the day I went to Harewood, late July (took my little lad out for the day) it was 10.15/30am and just by chance they were feeding the flamingos etc and the Red Kites came along for the free grub. There was five of them and flying extremely low circling above our heads, it was an amazing sight I have to say to get that close to them was something I won't forget in a while. According to a member of staff this is quite common, so between 10am & 10.30 the flamingo area is the place to be.

kites

A1/A64 junction is good for them - either 1 or 2, often low down, as is A64 between there and Seacroft, ditto road towards Tadcaster, have seen them perching near there, and road from Tad to Wetherby via Thorp Arch, had one take off straight over the car as we disturbed it eating road kill - you can't get bored of them!
