red tailed hawk in uk

heres a thumbnail of a red tailed hawk i stumbled upon in the derwent valley in north east england, how close did i get! the hawk gave an almighty screach then leeped out of tree, swooped in my direction and as i started to dive out of the way of this huge bird, it actually clipped me making my contact with dirt twice as fast. As i was getting up i heard another screach, when i looked i could see her coming back for another shot. I had no where to go for cover except for two small trees, so i got behind one only to watch a huge hawk do a 90 degree turn in mid air and land at my feet, opening wings and screaching, making forward lunges at me. I was past it when i saw these long very sharp talents close up, anyway cut a long story short, i still got a few shots with camera shake, a video of me screaming (somehow got switched on during camosion) i even went back with every thing i had wrapped around my arm, started to call it on my arm (realised it was an escape) then thought it was a bit of a bad idea? so i went and reported it. The hawk was eventually caught and is now in a safe place being very well looked after. After all that i still couldnt tell you if you saw a r-t-hawk but heres a pic!
thanx

whats going to happen to this bird then?
hi salty
the hawk is now been very well looked after at high spen, the guy from kielder bop centre looks after her, its actually a unregestered bird so what thomas posted will be right. They have been doing the same with snowy owls, due to harry potter movie parents have been buying snowy owls , not realising how hard they are to care for. So these people just release them thinking theyll adapt to the wild (idiots), so im pleased to say the red tailed hawk was located and rehomed before any harm came to her!
thanx

Hi a mate is a member of an organisation called raptor rescue deals with escapees and injured birds of prey.Trying to get them back to the wild in the case of the wild birds whenever possible.Sounds like the bird was imprinted bird thinking you were going to feed her lol
all the best

I know falconry is a controversial subject on BirdForum, but if anyone finds an escapee they could report it here:

http://www.ibr.org.uk/

Whatever one's feelings on falconry, it's probably better for the bird's welfare if it's reunited with it's owner.

I'd agree with Thomas however, there are far too many fools who buy a raptor on a whim, then release it when the novelty wears off. The Redtail was lucky it was someone such as Steven who found the bird, many would have thought it was attacking them and killed it.

Hi saluki,

Because the Redtail is not an indigenous species in the UK, would I be right in thinking that it is illegal to knowingly release (abandon) one into the wild in the hope that it will fend for itself?

Not sure Anthony, and it would be difficult to prove whether the bird had been abandoned or simply lost. In reality, I would imagine someone would attempt to sell a bird on rather than simply release it if they tired of it, but the market is over-saturated these days. Red Tails have never been that popular in the UK - too slow and cumbersom - Harris Hawks and Gosses are more popular.

I'd better stop here as I can feel the hot breath of the moderators on my neck . . . : )

Hi Saluki & Anthony,
It is illegal to release non indigenous species into the wild even the Queen Mother use to break the law with her liberty budgies.
It is difficult to prove malicious intentional release but the amount of Redtails and captive bred Buteos I gert called out to puts it beyhond being all accidents.
Redtails and common buzzards are always being advertised even to the horrendous adds " Free to Good Home " Everyone now wants Harris hawks because the price for them is too cheap.
