Redeeming Colo-I-Suva, Fiji (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone

Just wanted to make a quick note here about Colo-I-Suva Forest Reserve on the main island of Viti Levu in Fiji. I've just returned from a family trip to Fiji, and, unfortunately, we pulled out of a night at Raintree Lodge due to the various warnings on the internet about rape, muggings, etc, etc, in Colo-I-Suva.

We spoke to the manager of Raintree Lodge when we were there (I was allowed an hour and a half at noon to see as much as possible...), and he said that the incident was 15 years ago, and they can't remove the information from the tourist websites. The only thing that happens occasionally is that backpacks get stolen if they are left unattended while people are swimming at the waterfalls. So, I'm just posting this note here so that no other birders feel unsafe booking a trip to Colo-I-Suva. Also, if you feel the need, guides can be hired for a small fee to take you around the park, discouraging any unwanted attention ;) :t:

If you want more info, I'm sure emailing Raintree Lodge would be productive

Cheers
Josh

Well done, Josh! All too often a proper sense of perspective is lost after some social disturbances. Looking forward to your final bird list...

I know a few people who have not gone there based on the reputation it now has, unfortunately. Myself, I went anyway because I don't care about a little bit of trouble ;)

Me neither! In fact the only trouble I had there was from the park guards moaning and shouting at me because I went in too early...sorry, but by 0900 it's just too bloody late, so after shouting back at them I left them to it and paid my entrance fee back at the park hut instead ;)
