Probably ringed on the Isle of May, where there's a large Shag population and they do a lot of colour ringing. You can try looking on the colour ringing website:

You might need to be patient though because it's recently been redesigned and seems to be completely horrible to use. You have to read a manual before you can find anything!

Shags are colour ringed on several outer Forth islands. Many of these birds have been found wintering in NE Scotland. It would be very interesting if this one showed they also move south.

Mike.

Over the last few years we've had 2-3 each Autumn from SE Scotland, including birds from the Isle of May. Anywhere between now and December they turn up at Hartlepool but never seem to stay for more than a week or so.

Usually though they're red colour rings with lettering. It will be interesting to see if this one of theirs, maybe from a different year.

Shag chick ringed 05/06/12 Isle Of May. One of two chicks from same brood.

ps .... noted another paler Shag at low tide a few days later, but too far out for camera. I have a bad back at the moment and daren't risk a fall on the rocks for a closer look.
