Birding for fun
What Ho,
Could anyone help with sensibly priced bed and breakfast (or just bed) accomodation in Rome? Any weblinks etc gratefully received. Also, directions out of the city for a half day birding (train or bus) would also prove most helpful.
I am visiting the first weekend in November and may have a little time off to fit in a little birding, if the missus agrees!
Thank you in anticpation,
regards,
Jono

Jono,

Did you go - and did you find anything of interest in the city?

I'm off for a few days next week, and whilst I'm banned from any birding trips i'll be keeping at least half an eye (ifnot more!) on the avi-fauna.

Hi Rob,
Yep, went in first weekend of November and very good it was, too. On the birding front I had black redstart in many areas, esp Ciampino station, green sandpiper heading downstream over the Tiber from bridge near Palentine Hill, Italian sparrow in and around Frascati and best of all a pergrine being mobbed by hooded crows over the Trajan Market. Very fortuitous as one respondent to my original question has lived inRome for a number of years, knows they are present, but has yet to tick one.
Just to add, if you have a spare afternoon then I highly recommend the train ride up to Frascati. This is very cheap and easy from either Termini or Ciampino. Lovely hilltop village. Good hedgerows and trees plus mountains all around. Saw an eagle sp as I was sitting outside a bar but far too distant to id. I made the point (for family sake!) of leaving the bins and scope at home.
Enjoy your trip, I'd be keen to hear what you get for non birding.
regards,
Jono
