On the way down to check for Long-eared Owls this morning I was very dissapointed to see a birder wandering around in the Haverton Scrub. Needless to say when I went to check for the owls this morning there were non in the usual spot. It would be impossible for me to say the absence was caused by this birder but it is easy for me to say it's a likely cause, something I couldn't say if he wasn't there.

Last year we successfully managed the owl watchpoint on a daily basis for nearly three months! At least one owl could be seen every day during this time. This year, due to visitors straying off the path to find them both during and out of hours, the owls have not settled and we have not been able to share these magnificent birds with the wider birding public.

Last year well over 2,000 people came specifically to see the owls and it would be a shame that a handful of individuals could ruin it for everyone.

Please do not come and look for the owls in the Haverton Scrub, either out of or during our opening times. You are more than welcome to have a look from the cycleway and from the wooden 5 bar gate. If they are present we will do our utmost to make sure they can be seen. Because they were well managed last year they were still being seen in March so there is no rush to see them now. Letting them settle will give you and others the best chance of seeing them. Please spread the word amongst your friends and around any of your local birding clubs. We will try and get some photos of anyone seen in the scrub up on here so if you recognise them and know who they are you can have a chat with them about where they can go.

If you have any questions please get in touch or contact me through the reserve.

Another coincidence this morning. No birders in the scrub and a single Long-eared Owl from the Viewpoint :D It will be manned from 10:30 till 15:00. Please ask at reception for details.

A single Long-eared Owl from is sunning himself from the Owl Viewpoint this morning and we'll be showing him off till 15:00. Please ask at reception for details.

A 3rd winter Iceland gull spent a couple of hours on Back Saltholme but departed before I could get any photos. Fortunately just as that left a Short-eared Owl made an appearance. Always something to see :)

Ringing Demonstration with the Tees Ringing Group - Sunday 12th February

As some of you may know we tried to run a ringing event on the reserve a few weeks ago and got blown out by the wind :( Because it was planned so far in advance we couldn't do much about this so in an effort to have a more succesful event we will be keeping a closer eye on the weather forecast nearer the time. We are pleased to say the time is near :) We will have a demonstration ringing event this Sunday (12th) from 08:30 - 12:30. Please pass the word around to anyone who might be interested and see you soon.

Sadly a Roe buck was hit by a car and killed just outside the entrance gate in the early hours of this morning, I see deer regularly on the road in this area and near Tioxide so please be aware when driving in the area.

Thank you for letting us know. Unfortunately this road isn't the best so we just hope more people are aware of the willdife in the area and knock the mph's off as they drive past.

Hi I live in Scarborough may pop up to visit soon looks a good place to spot

While not wanting to be too biased, I think it's an excellent place but hopefully some more BirdForumers will also encourage you up. Have a good read through of the Durham Birding forum and also the sightings page on the Teesmouth Bird Club website. This will give you a good idea of what's around the area and so you can make a full day of it. If you're going to pop up then May can be fantastic if you get some good movement, June and July is in full swing with our breeding tern and gull colony plus outside chance of late leaving/early returning waders and August/September for waders. As Autumn continues Hartlepool is excellent for seawatching and migrants if the winds are good.

Hope that's of use?

yup I recently started and been to Bempton twice now, was toying with Saltburn as it is just over an hour from me. I will try and get up soon days off permitting...
