A migrating wader I'm not 100 % sure about.
Where: Natural Parc - Ses Salines. Ibiza (Spain)
When: 11.Oct.2020
The Salinas (literally*«saltpond») are one of the few humid areas in Ibiza, and a favourite with migrants. Today, among other waders I've spotted what I believe could be a ruff (which would be a lifer, hence my doubts).
After checking the Svensson guide, I've narrowed it down to this guess. Here are some remarks.
- The beak is not particularly long (maybe similar to that of a dunlin, but it does not point downwards).
- I've taken a picture close to a greend sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) for reference.
- The bird plumage had a beige/pale-orange/light-brown hue more so on the neck, particularly the throat.
- Conspicuous details: dark eye line and the crown (top of the head seemed also a little darker than the rest of the head).
The question is whether this wader could indeed be a ruff or else some other Calidris. Thanks for the tips and ideas!
