Service in the UK for Nikon EDG binoculars? (1 Viewer)

I believe the situation for buying a new EDG from the vendor in Osaka, Japan requires that you return it to them which could get unwieldy for small problems or servicing issues - and the warranty is only 1 year anyway. The future of EDG servicing in general is unknown because of parts availability etc and Nikon UK don't have a great reputation for being helpful in these matters. Does anybody know if there are independent organisations (e.g. East Coast Binocular Repairs or something like it) that would be able to work on EDGs in the future as a backstop position?

Ring Viking optical they're good. East coast service Zeiss exclusively now as they're very busy for a reason [great service].

I expect Viking will say they can work on them but may not have access to parts. Only a guess, it's a real downside to Nikons. Having a service like ECBR in UK is something that pushes me towards Zeiss product because it's peace of mind if the worst happens.

Nikon dropped the ball with their after sales service.
Great bins, great Japanese quality, but i wouldn't touch them..... with the other big 3, and even Vortex, giving much better warranty peace of mind.

Thanks guys, that confirms my suspicions.

I called Gary at ECBR and he confirmed that he doesn't work on Nikon.

I also spoke to Nikon directly and they advised me to send an email to the spare parts dept to enquire about parts availability for EDGs. Only sent this yesterday afternoon so let's see what response I get.

My experience with Nikon hasn’t been great on binoculars but I am not saying it’s the same for all.

This was my response from Nikon spare parts:

I've had a look into this with our support team and they've advised that there are 2 versions of EDG 7x42. The product code for the old model is BAA770EA which we are out of stock and parts no longer available, so as long you have the newer model, then parts should be available.

So I'm assuming the old model he mentions is what we call the EDG I i.e. the short-lived open bridge version. This sounds promising for the EDG II, but not exactly definitive!

It’s what I usually refer to as ‘Nikon Wooly!’
