Shropshire Birding (2 Viewers)

Got an adult summer Med. Gull at Mire Lake on Tuesday evening, thanks to Andy ~ most probably the same bird!! First full adult summer bird I've had in the county, all the previous one's were immatures....
Nailed Long-eared Owl & Nightjar recently too, obviously the site has to remain 'undisclosed', however, both species were seen well & within 15 minutes of arriving.... That's pretty awesome!!!

Now on 161 species for my county year list, a personal best!!! :)
Still need stuff like Little owl, Crossbill, Mandarin, Ruff.... So, will I reach the magic Shrop. 170 for the year???

15 days till I return! See if I can get my uk list off the ground, still stuck on 55 after the Barn owl on the Shrewsbury ring road on the way to Heathrow, back on the 3rd of Jan!

Nothing much to report, but did take a Virgin Balloon flight over Shrewsbury and out towards Shawbury yesterday evening, passing over Mookmoor and just to the north of Haughmond Hill.

Took loads of photos of the area which show how much habitat there is around. Will try and post some of them. There's a nice looking little reservoir just to the south of the A5 about half a mile east of the A49/A5 roundabout that looks interesting.

Northbound roost flights of gulls over the allotment at Greenfields are picking up in numbers, but looked down from the balloon on 3 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls last night that were moving steadily south.

Cheers,

Shropshire Knowledge

Hi,

I do a bit of bird watching and quite a bit of fishing.

I was down from Cheshire fishing on the Severn at the Attingham Estate near Atcham the other day. There seemed to be an awful lot of raptors around - or at least you could hear them calling from trees and fields on the other side of the river to where I was at Lower Brompton.

Is there anyone familiar with this area ? If so, just wondered whether you have Hobbies and Perigrines and what other birds it might be worth looking out for next time I'm down

Yeah, 2nd Wood Sand for Chelmarsh this year, previous one was found by Yvonne Chadwick, this one was found by my mate Dave Western!!
Little Egret & Osprey still getting in at VP.... a few Common Tern's were at Mire...

I had 5 or 6 Crossbill at Bury Ditches the other day.....
Now on 162 species for the owd Shrops. Year List!!!...

Otter?

Hi all

Not done much birding and not been on the forum much for a few weeks. Might try to get to VP on Saturday morning.

I noted this yesterday morning but got a slightly better look this morning, however I was travelling too fast and on my own ...

On the A5 eastbound between Shrewsbury and Telford, after the A49 roundabout and about 200 metres before the ?2nd? bridge over the road (so I'm guessing that it's about 2 kms from the roundabout) there's quite a large dead animal by the side of the road on the LHS. I couldn't see the head but I was struck this morning by how much it looked like an adult otter. It's probably a wet badger or a dog, but if anyone is heading that way it would be interesting to hear what you think ... without risking life and limb, of course.

Dead otter update

Passenger prepped and I managed to go past a bit slower this morning. Not conclusive - still couldn't see the front end - but it looks very much like an otter. Rather sad if my 1st Shropshire otter is a dead'un.

Yeah!!! Finally nailed the 2 Common Crane's at Kynnersley village this evening!! What a relief after they have given us all such a run around this year!!!
163 species for year now!!! :)

Not there anymore. Any idea who collects the larger roadkill? Presumably the local council?

Hello Chris

When I found a dead Otter on the Baschurch Road last year I called the Wildlfe Trust and they sent someone quite quickly to collect it for research. I assume you mean that and not for cooking/BBQ purposes!

Clouded Yellow at the office today.

All the best,

Barbecued Otter. Hmm. Maybe not. With hindsight, letting the SWT know would have been a good idea. Useful thing, hinddight. Mind you, I wouldn't have fancied parking and walking back down that road in normal traffic conditions.
