9.10.23 Mist netting at Farm 2, lower site.

This is the start of our 23-24 "winter" mist netting programme. Farm 2 winter runs (as always) from 1st October to about the beginning of April as these sites are not in the BTO Winter CES.

Two things are different at this site this winter. This is the first time for a few years that fresh wild bird cover has been established in the spring. The mix is new too, dominated by chicory leading to a very thick stand that appears to hold lots of seed.
We have also changed the net lay out slightly, dispensing with nets along the front of a beech hedge where we never caught anything - probably because the hedge was simply too thick for birds to enter fast enough that they could not avoid a net.

The goldfinch were using the chicory, while very jumpy they were flying high into nearby trees, never near the nets.

There were strange dynamics going on between the mistle thrush and the jackdaws. At one point one jackdaw noisily chased a thrush away across the (large) field and back. Not long after 8 jackdaws were chasing one round a paddock and into a tree.

Many thanks to all concerned, Mike.

Sheep here have got into the habit of playing with the nets so we have moved out of their paddock. The farmer has kindly moved the relevant feeder to another hedge where we have pairs of nets on each side. With another three nets across the end and one up the side of wild bird cover we have one more net than previously.

One of the chaffinch was an unusual male. We measure "wing length" as max chord length - distance from carpal to wing tip with feathers straightened. Normally male chaffinch we catch go up to 90 mm and we catch a few 91 or 92. This bird measured 96mm. Colouration on the coverts was very striking with white on median and greater coverts replaced with pink, esp on the former. Primary and secondary fringes were also suffused with pink. Lesser coverts were grey, but grey on the head was buried much deeper under a rather richer brown than usual with mantle and back very similar. Rump was green though perhaps slightly thinner than normal. On departure calls were totally normal chaffinch. As usual we didn't have a camera :-(

Had been wondering where the yites (yellowhammer) were as we haven't been seeing the usual flocks in the hedges round the fields. They were probably in the stubbles as wet weather has prevented any preparation for spring crops. Now the stubbles have a covering of snow so many are visiting the feed stations.

One of the female chaffinch retraps wore a ring that was not used by our group. It was ringed on 15/10/18 as a first year bird but will have to wait to find out where.

When feeding here recently there have been noticeably fewer "birds" but the site has been invaded by pheasants from a neighbouring shoot - up to 50 seen at a time. Don't now if there is any relationship.

Five out of six yellohammer retraps were ringed by us yesterday at our other feed station 1.5km away.

This was ringed as a first year female chaffinch in Flintshire, 296km south of our recapture.

Thanks Mike... will there be any more reports before New Year, or was that the last session?

Hopefully the weather won't be too tooo awful over this side - let the west have it all LOL:devilish:

Hope not the last, but the forecasts aren't looking good ... but they try to forecast too far ahead.

Mike.
