starling fledgling found (1 Viewer)

hi, my mom found a young starling on a busy street outside our neighborhood. she brought him home and we have some problems. I've been trying to feed him different types of food, but he will NOT eat!! I tried a baby bird formula we have, bugs, moistened bread...he won't eat anything! the weirdest part is that he doesn't chirp at all. we got him yesterday evening at about 6:00, and it's already 10:40 am the next day. he hops around if we take him out of the box, and he's been preening himself. I see no injuries, and he'll flap his wings if I move him around on my hand. so basically, my biggest worry is how do I get him to eat, and WHAT do I give him? I know he's a fledgling, because most of his feathers are in, but his primary wing feathers are still short. he is pretty alert right now; when we brought him in he just sat there with his eyes shut, so maybe he was in shock? but this morning when I first checked on him he was alert and he looks around a lot. one last thing: what color should the droppings be? because his seem to be lightening up to a very light greenish color. does that mean anything? I know in pet birds(we had parakeets for years) that could mean sickness or something, but is it the same in wild birds? hope y'all can help me out!

forgot to attach a picture we took of him. he's outside in our yard, and he likes to hop around a bit. but he doesn't try to fly

It's not too late to return this bird to where it came from, and let its parents feed it.

Perhaps there could be a message at the top of the forum index page at this time of year.

If you find a fledgling, leave it be!!!

I know that people are well intentioned, and that they believe they are doing the right thing, but almost always they are not.

Dumping the youngster in some random location and hoping for a miracle reunion seems pretty pointless. We usually call these kinds of birds...."cat food". Seems like you have a pet now.

There is. Top thread on the Birds and Birding forum. Hopefully most folks find it there and if not someone usually refers them to it. Not sure if we could get it on the Forum index page.

Yeah, it seems Stickies are ignored in every forum I've ever been a member of. So, upon reflection, I guess a message would be ignored as well. I guess you have it all covered with the Stickies.

It's just so frustrating to see so many people "saving" fledglings.

Dave - maybe that sticky can be posted at the top of some other forums as well, e.g. 'nestboxes' and 'food and feeders'? Those seem to be the ones that have quite a few queries about fledglings possibly being abandoned...

Starling

Hi, I found a baby starling today today at about 9.00 pm. It was in my back garden and the thing is, I haven't got a CLUE what to do with it!? My cat seemed to think it was food and picked him/her up in his mouth and I'm sure he's injured. I don't know what to feed it, where to put it, anything! Please help me as I don't know what to do...
