Dear everyone,

The current version (v2.0) of the CBR Checklist of Birds of China is available online now.

In this version, we implemented several changes:

1. Taxonomy and nomenclature was updated based on the IOC World Bird Names List v2.8;

2. Recent new records of birds in China were added into the current version;

3. The IUCN Red List category was provide for each species;

We still appreciate for any comment and suggestion anytime.

Great. Any chance for a next update with ssp ?

Just a minor thing I came across: 0979 Strophocincla imbriacata, should be imbricata.

Thanks Daniel, it's indeed a spelling mistake, we will fix it in the next version.

About the spp, we managed to but it's harder than what we think, I hope the next update could show more infos including ssp, but it really depends on the progress of our works.

CBR vs IOC

Taxonomy and nomenclature was updated based on the IOC World Bird Names List v2.8
Thanks for maintaining this useful checklist, and for keeping us posted on updates.

Concerning the species recognised, there are a small number of differences compared with IOC.

eg, Melanitta americana, Phylloscopus occisinensis, Paradoxornis polivanovi, Sitta przewalskii, Turdus maximus, Saxicola stejnegeri are recognised by IOC, but not by CBR;
Larus mongolicus, Alauda japonica are recognised by CBR, but not by IOC.

Presumably these are intentional, reflecting different opinions on the treatments in these cases?

Yes, as your guess Richard, we based on the IOC but not totally obey it, this checklist shows our own opinions, and some of which differ from IOC.

For one example, Reed PB, the distribution infos we know demonstrated below, Blue - heudei(presumed as the historical occurence area), Green - polivanovi(presumed as the historical occurence area)

OK, Wei Qian - just checking. :t:

Such record distribution maps for species/subspecies in China should be a valuable resource.

PS. Any news on when China Bird Reports 2008+ should be available...?
