Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey (10 Viewers)

Visit this morning for a couple of hours from 6.00 onwards produced over 40 species, highlights being singles of Snipe, Green Sandpiper and LR Ringed Plover, plus a Kingfisher flying down the new stream. Noted one of Adult GC Grebes had juvenile with it that looked too young to have flown in.

Good reports of breeding with another cluch of Tufted Duck , BH Gull and Common Tern Juv in good numbers to . Warblers doing well also as Green Finch Bull Finch and Nuthatch showing well. August Sat 9th for next work party . Clearing willow and cut grass for reptiles .

Great visit after a few week's absence last night; made better by bumping into Dave, Rich and Andy. Great to see numbers of waders building with around 50+ Lapwing, 1 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover, 3 Green Sandpiper and a similar number of Commons.

Emporer Dragonflies were much in evidence and I picked up a Gatekeeper and Large Skipper on the mound. Off to Turkey on Monday - another 2 weeks away from the patch.

Three Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Green Sandpipers and 1 Common Snipe today; all preferring the workings to the right of the mound.

Popped down early this morning, duck numbers are building with 22 Gadwall, 20+ Teal, 13 Shoveler noted. It's apparent that some species have had a good breeding season, the Terns have several juveniles with one also still to fledge on the raft. The Little Grebe numbered nine with one adult with five juvs & another adult with two. Two Green Sandpipers were feeding in the flooded plant yard but no other waders were seen during my visit.

John.

Hi John,
2 pairs of Common Terns bred on the 'Tern Raft' producing a single chick each. 5 pairs bred in the 'works' producing 11 chicks between them.

29 pairs of BHG's bred with an average of 2 chicks each.

Kevin

Good selection of waders early this morning, 6 Common Sandpipers (5 at the E end of the workings & 1 in the plant yard), 2 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, & 2 Green Sanpipers all on the meadow. Also 30 plus Lapwing, 15 Shoveler, 20 plus Gadwall & Teal,11 Little Grebe, & good no's of Hirundines over the workings inc 20 plus Swift.

For a second day Wood Sandpiper Black-Tailed Godwit Green Sand and Common Sand Piper all in the meadow . More Sands in plant yard. Hanson s continue with pumping water from plant yard.

Great to catch up with the Patch Commander after a 2 weeks absence. The Wood Sandpiper turned up out of nowhere; neither of us saw it land but we had a great master class in tringa sandpiper identification. The Black-tailed Godwit remaind and I was astounded at the wildfowl numbers now present.

I have 2 spare seats for the birdfair on Friday if anyone is interested; departing my house at 0600hrs.

The 2 Garganey were still present this morning on the meadow along with the Ruff, 4 Ringed Plover, 9 Black Tailed Godwit, 2 Snipe, 3 Common Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, & Wheatear.

John.

Popped down to Tices on Saturday for the first time in a year. Interesting to see the change to the stream. What's the long-term plan for fencing around the silt lagoon?

Photographically there wasn't much about within range, although this chap showed up briefly (even then it's a heavy crop at 700mm). Am I right in thinking it's one of the common sandpipers?
