Tilley Hats.. Comments please (1 Viewer)

Tilley hats are superb in stopping UV rays hitting your bald areas. I unfortunately lost mine, through my own fault, and must buy another, as I currently have to use sun block to stop the UV rays - my skin burns very easily because of a heart drug I'm taking.

The Tilley hat is great. I'm on my second one (I lost the first one). They really became popular here when they were issued to the Canadian troops and sailors deployed to the Gulf during and just before the Gulf war. All of the news pictures of the Canadian troops seemed to show them wearing Tilleys. I was given my first one by the QM of HMCS Protector because of help I gave in getting her ready to go to the Gulf.
The Tilley is a Canadian product made by Tilley Endurables in Don Mills, Ontario. They also make shorts etc, all of which are much too expensive for me, but I do love the hats. I use the wider brimmed variety because the way that I burn, I need all the protection I can get.
Buy Canadian! Happy Canada Day!

I've worn a green Tilley hat for 10+ years now and would recommend one. Mines been sailing in the Baltic, kayaking in Greenland, mountaineering in the Alps, treking in the Namib desert Oh and birding too. It's the first thing I pack.

Here in blighty if you wear a baseball cap you are considered a 'Chav' or 'Hoodie' chip shops and shopping centers (malls) won't let you in.

Hi Dan:

Happy Canada Day to you as well.
Thanks for sharing that story about yourself
and the troops with us. I enjoyed reading.
Way to Go!!

Dan: Are you serious about this.. they wont let
you wear a cap? Mind, some people go into dinner
with their caps on backwards, if you get my drift.

Does this go for Ladies as well?

I got a cheap sun hat at Millets (UK mass-market/budget outdoor equipment chain) after seeing that our troops - and even a visiting Member of Parliament - in the Gulf seemed to be wearing something very similar. I guess it figures - Canadian troops get Tilleys and UK forces get whatever HMG could get cheap at the time :) . I wonder what the Yanks were wearing?

Tilley hats - there's a good number of them in this part of West Africa!

Given one as a present about 10 years ago by Canadian friends in the UN, and used it ever since running about in the bush, in Angola mostly. It has regular trips to the washing machine, still comes out white, and back in when it's going brown again.

Always needs stretching over your knee to make it fit after a wash - not sure about leaving it in your will though!

What an interesting subject! I'd never heard of Tilley hat 'till now. Personally I have about 5 baseball caps which I wear for birding, one at a time of course, which are great for keeping the sun out of my face but not ideal as the tops of my ears occasionally burn and they lift off in high wind, the caps not my ears.

I have even been know to wear it the wrong way round to avoid hitting my video camera with the peak....Who cares???
Be carefull now! It is a well documented fact that baseball caps drain your IQ.

Colin.

PS The effect is doubled if worn with the peak at the back.

Yes, The Tilley hat would have to be stretched
just like my jeans.. after being laundered.

Happy Birding All. I appreciate all the different
areas, ie. Angola and UK.. US.. everywhere.

As for what the US Troops are wearing,
don't even want to comment.. here..
I wish all the troops were wearing Magic Hats
that got them back in their homeland. NO MORE WAR.
Tall Order.

I am off to the Tilley shop today.

I have a tilley hat and tilley shorts, but have used them mostly for horseback riding... they were given to me as a gift. Fits wonderful, comfortable, functional, and best part, replaced free for various reasons..... Never had a problem with it shrinking... or the shorts for that matter...... did have a little problem with gaining some weight though. LOL!! Unfortunatly I have packed them in some box, some where, during my latest move and can not find the box now. :(

I think all of their products come with detailed directions for cleaning and care. And they have all kinds of neat pockets to stuff things into as well! LOL

Well Hello Lynn:

Great to hear from you..
oh.. my.. the shorts can be a problem.

I did attend yesterday at the Tilley Outlet.. OUTLET.

Well, the hats were $75.00 .. so will wait a bit.

That sounds high. I thought most hats were around $50.

the hats are great, but the clothes are atrocious in my opinion. plus, they don't even come in waist size 30. all start at 32.

By way of another alternative to the Tilley, I've been known to wear a Jab-a-Roo "Outback Shade" (also known as a "Horizon Breeze", apparently), an Aussie stockman style of hat: very cool and comfortable thanks to the perforated crown, and much cheaper than a Tilley.

You can, if the mood takes you, wet the hat before putting it on - the evaporation of the water keeps you cool for ages.

Looks like a good hat. I think the main advantage of the Tilley is the wide range of sizes that they come in. I'm afraid i have a big head, 7 7/8 and most hats just dont go that far, I notice that their largest xx large is only a 7 3/4.
I recently got Tilleys new airflo hat but haven't been too impressed its just too heavily built and the mesh is double thick and doesn't seem to let the air thru like it should. Last weekend birding around the Salton sea it was 108 most of the time and a nice large sized airflo hat would have been good, the airflo tilley was a little too hot. Great birding though 98 species in a day.

Yup, I've been using something similar for a few years - leather drover's hat in winter and a canvas, mesh, version in the summer. All from Country Supplies in the UK.

I'd read a lot about Tilley hats and decided I had to get one. It was highly disappointing - the rim isn't wide enough, it was very thick and heavy and that stupid double strap just gets in the way all of the time.

So it's back to the good old Aussie hats again.

Tilleys come in a range of brim widths. If you are in a boat or on cliffs I think you will appreciate the straps or least I do.

Don't give me Tilley hats. Millets, similar for a tenner, or Hitchin market for waterproof Made In England wide brimmed hats that come in good selection of sizes. Sure they are available on most market stalls.
B***dy Tilley Hats. Gertcha
