Trying to learn birds (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to learn how to identify birds by sight/call. I've been around other birders before, and they seem to be able to identify birds in an instant. Are there any free resources that I could use to learn how to identify birds? Thank you in advance.

I think it's just practice and experience. Get a field guide (Sibley's is good if you're in the US) and some binoculars and go outside and start ID'ing birds. Start with whatever you see outside your house. As for free resources you could take a look at the photos and songs at ebird.org, and the bird songs as xeno-canto.org.

The Merlin Bird App is very good for learning calls/songs as it identifies these for you and gives links to recordings for you to confirm. Highly recommended by me though far from perfect and how comprehensive it is will depend on your location.

All the best

Paul
